Winter 2009/2010
  • 2010 Southern States Horse Feeds Line Introduction - Southern States is excited to announce changes to its horse feed line up. The Reliance Horse Feed Line has been revised and a new Southern States line of horse feeds will replace them and be available starting February 15th, 2010. These new horse feeds will have individual bags for more convenient identification and most will contain added organic selenium. Organic selenium has been shown to have greater absorption by the horse than inorganic selenium sources and can improve reproductive, muscle and immune system function.
  • Feeding Beet Pulp to Horses - Beet pulp is the fibrous material that remains after most of the sugar is removed from sugar beets. It is fed as an highly digestible supplement to a horse’s forage intake, and dried beet pulp may be incorporated into quality horse feeds as a source of digestible fiber and to significantly lower the sugar and starch content of the feed. Beet pulp is an excellent ingredient for complete horse feeds, where no hay or a limited amount of hay or pasture is fed, such as feeds for older horses or horses with respiratory problems such as heaves. Examples of high quality, beet pulp-based feeds include Triple Crown Senior, Triple Crown Complete, Triple Crown Growth, and Legends Racing.
  • Intervet Foal Vaccination - As with adult horses, vaccination of foals is an important component of an overall infectious disease control program.  Over the past few years, foal vaccination has been a contentious issue, with a considerable amount of confusion as to when to start vaccinating foals and how many doses they should receive.
  • Feeding the Starved Horse - Horses that have been the subject of abuse or neglect are usually in a starved condition. Horses in this condition will have very little muscle mass remaining and will be very weak. They will need much care and attention to regain their trust, and a sound nutrition program to get them back into proper body condition and health.
Fall 2009
  • Vet's Corner: Potomac Horse Fever - To protect horses from potentially deadly diseases, owners regularly vaccinate for a variety of common diseases. However, there is a somewhat forgotten foe not always included in every horse’s vaccination regimen.
  • Equine Health: Tying Up Disease Update in the Horse - Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy (PSSM), better known as “tying up disease” is a metabolic muscle problem found in stock and draft horse breeds.
  • Feeding Horses - "What Every Vet Should Know" Webinar - On September 9th, Dr. Marty Adams from Southern States Cooperative conducted an Equine Nutrition Webinar geared towards vets. It provided insightful information that vets can use when diagnosing metabolic diseases. If you missed the webinar, you can catch it again right here!
  • Mycotoxins in Grains and Animal Feeds - Mycotoxins are toxins produced by molds that can affect the health of animals in many ways. These mycotoxins can be present in hay, pasture and grain. Mycotoxins are stable chemical compounds, they are resistant to heating and can remain in the feed for an extended period of time.

Spring 2009

  • Managing Your Horse On A Tight Budget - Most horse owners do not own horses as a business, or with expectations of generating household income from them. Rather, owners are more intent on maximizing the amount of pleasure or involvement per dollar spent. Saving money when it comes to horse ownership is always important but even more so when the economy is down and people are struggling with everyday bills.
  • Feeding the Easy Keeper Webinar Presentation - On January 21st, Jessica Lohman and Dr. Marty Adams presented the webinar "Feeding the Easy Keeper" in our first of our equine webinar series. Many thanks to everyone who participated. We were thrilled with the attendence for our first webinar. You may download the presentation for your own review.
  • Equine Parasites: A Constant Threat - With approximately 40 parasite species waiting to infect horses, controlling parasites throughout the seasons can set horses up for a healthy year.
  • Feeding the Insulin Resistant Horse - Recent studies show some horses, ponies and donkeys are prone to insulin resistance (IR). Our nutritionist offers some advice on what to look for and how to prevent, cure or help horses that are insulin resistant.
