What does "fixed formula" mean?
The term "fixed formula" means keeping the same ingredients in the feed despite the availability of cheaper, inferior quality ingredients. This allows the concentration of sugar and starch to remain constant, which allows the horse's digestive microbes in the hindgut to maintain a balanced population and this ultimately reduces the risk of colic.
What are some other benefits of a “fixed formula?”
A fixed-ingredient formula also provides greater palatability and consistent consumption for faster growth rates, increased milk production and maintenance of body condition. Southern States does not change formulas or use inferior ingredients and holds the health of the horse and the trust of the owner in high regard.
What is Controlled Carbohydrate Technology?
This refers to research-based formulas that include the addition of digestible fiber sources (beet pulp and soy hulls), added soy oil, and exact grain selection to achieve low levels of soluble carbohydrates. Horse feeds that contain low levels of starch and sugar contribute to less risk of insulin resistance, colic and founder. Controlled Carbohydrate Technology also allows for proper bone development in growing horses and improved muscle performance and calmer behavior.
Why feed organic selenium?
Forages (hay and pasture) are the major dietary source of selenium for horses. Selenium intake depends upon the amount and availability of selenium in the soil in which the forage is grown. The eastern and western United States have below normal levels and/or availability of soil selenium therefore the forages grown in these areas also include inadequate levels of selenium. All Legends® and Triple Crown® horse feeds now contain organic selenium as the sole source of selenium. This product is a natural, organic form of seleniumwhich is produced through a yeast culturing process. This type of selenium is absorbed better and is less toxic than sodium selenite, the inorganic selenium source traditionally used in horse feeds. This unique product is listed as "selenium yeast" in the list of ingredients. Selenium requiring enzymes provide antioxidant protection to prevent cellular damage from oxidation, which occurs in every cell of the horse's body. These enzymes also directly influence growth, immune function and reproduction.
What are the advantages of a complete feed with minerals and vitamins over a diet of grain and hay?
Almost every vitamin and mineral has suggested dietary recommendations and depending on what stage of life the animal is in, that recommendation changes. Not all forages and grains contain sufficient levels of minerals and vitamins required by the horse. In many areas of the country, soils are mineral deficient, which leads to mineral deficient forages and grains. Also, while pasture is a good source of vitamin E and usually provides an adequate amount for a horse's needs, hay contains very low levels of vitamin E and will likely result in a deficiency without supplementation. Legends® and Triple Crown® feeds are complete feeds balanced for vitamins and minerals and virtually eliminate the chance of a horse having an inadequate supply of vitamins and minerals.
What is the advantage of feeding a live yeast culture?
Equine research studies with yeast culture added to the diet have shown improved growth rates in young horses, improved milk production in mares and improved coat and hoof conditions for all horses.
