Best Management Practices

Why supplements for your camelids?
Supplementing hay and pasture for a camelid is essential to provide quality nutrition. A quality nutrition program utilizing forage and supplements can increase fiber production and overall health.
Dr. Norman Evans and Southern States nutritionists know what it takes to produce the luster, sheen and staple length desired while maintaining fiber fineness and preventing fiber blowout. The Southern States supplements employ levels of copper, biotin, zinc, niacin, Vitamin E and amino acids needed to promote fiber quality without allowing fiber blowout. Vitamin levels and mineral balances in Southern States supplements help prevent crooked legs and promote milk production, reproductive efficiency and fiber
quality, while allowing the animal to cope with stress and prevent ulcers.

No nutrition program is complete without testing the forage, the water, the supplement and the vitaminmineral mix, then evaluating the sum total of the ingredients supplied.
Southern States camelid supplements are formulated to compliment grass hay and pasture that tests 10 % to 14% protein and 55 to 60% TDN with a potassium level of less than 2.5%.

Llama Maintenance E/T is fed at 1.0 lbs per 300 lbs body weight daily. For periods of extreme cold feeding rates of 1.5 times this level are recommended.

Alpaca Maintenance E/T is fed at 0.5 lbs per 100 lbs of body weight or about 0.75 lbs per average 150 lb alpaca. Males and geldings usually require 20 to 25% less supplement. For periods of extreme cold added energy and feeding rates of the gestation and lactation formula is recommended.

Feeding amounts dependent upon available foragecquality/quantity, body condition score & milk production. For extreme cold weather: Llama/Alpaca Gestation and Lactation E/T works well at the suggested rate to provide energy.
Vitamin Mineral Blend "E" TM
This vitamin mineral salt blend for camelids is the result of 18 years of field research. It has been refined and improved from two separate blends for llamas and alpacas to one superior blend.
Available in three sizes, Vitamin Mineral Blend E provides extra nutrients that are especially beneficial to
gestating and lactating animals; those who have higherneeds because of their use, and the more timid animal lower in the pecking order.
As the camelid population ages, it is now realized that older arthritic camelids would have benefited from
the increased source of readily available nutrients. Vitamin Mineral Blend contains digestive aids to
minimize the problem of fescue fungus and to maintain lower body temperatures during extreme periods of heat and humidity. This blend contains levels of niacin and B-vitamins thought to aid milk production as well as vitamins and minerals associated with fiber growth in other species. This blend provided 21% salt as well as levels of vitamins A, D, E and selenium that should be an aid to all alpacas.

Use free choice, replenish every 3 to 5 days; or top dress over a professionally formulated bagged feed supplement. (The bagged supplement should be an alpaca supplement for alpacas and a llama supplement formulated for llamas.) The vitaminmineral "E" blend should be the only source of salt, vitamins, or minerals other than the respective bagged supplement. When first introduced, it often takes 7 to 10 days for the animal to appreciate the taste of the blend. The color of this blend can vary slightly from brownish to reddish depending on the batch color of iron utilized. The taste should be the same, as three natural taste additives to enhance and regulate consumption are used.
Available in 12.5 lb (400 feedings), 25 lb (800 feedings) and 50 lb (1600 feedings).
