What you need to know about weed control in your pond
Whether your pond is used for irrigation or pleasure,
aquatic weeds can be detrimental to a healthy and beautiful
pond. Excessive weeds can interfere with fishing, boating,
swimming and irrigation. Weed control in ponds can be
tricky. Watershed safety means treatment options can be
limited. However, there are products available that help
control weeds in ponds. Early identification and treatment of
a problem will provide the best results. Algaecides, dyes
and other herbicides can be used to control aquatic weeds.
Once the problem has been identified, consult your local
Southern States dealer to determine the best treatment for
your problem and conditions.
Prevent Weeds This Summer with Aquashade®
Aquashade®, an aquatic dye registered by the EPA, controls weeds by blocking portions of the sunlight spectrum that are required by underwater plant and algae growth. By preventing the light from penetrating the water, photosynthesis in young weeds is inhibited and may prevent development.
- Controls a variety of weeds and algae by blocking sunlight.
- Creates a beautiful aqua-blue coloration to water without clouding or significantly reducing visibility.
- Easy to apply-pour along the water's edge or apply evenly on the surface with a sprayer.
- Effective for use in sites ranging from backyard garden pools to large business park and residential
development ponds.
- Farm and recreational ponds are not restricted for livestock watering or swimming following application.
- Does not interfere with irrigation uses.
- Effective as a low-dose concentration - one gallon treats one acre of water with an average depth of 4'.
Stop Hydrilla and other Algae with Cutrine® Plus
Algae problems in ponds can quickly deteriorate the beauty and the quality of ponds. Oxygen levels are essential for healthy, clearer ponds. Algae blooms can quickly choke the oxygen from the water, leading to fish kills. Cutrine® Plus is an algaecide that controls existing algae and inhibits rapid reinfestation.
- Controls all three forms of algae-planktonic,
filamentous, and chara and the noxious submersed
weed hydrilla verticillata.
- Registered for use in farm fish and industrial ponds,
irrigation water conveyance systems, drinking water
reservoirs, plus many other uses.
- No restrictions for domestic uses, livestock watering
or swimming following application.
- Available in two formulations-liquid or granular.
- Compatible in tank mixes with aquatic herbicides

What Should I Feed the Fish in My Pond?
Southern States produces two complete fish feeds, Li'l Strike® and Big Strike®. These formulations have been scientifically designed for optimal health and growth of pond fish. Li'l Strike®'s higher protein level and smaller pellet size are perfect for fish less than 6" long. The bigger pellets and slightly lower protein level of Big Strike® are better for larger fish. Fish should be fed as much as they can eat in 15 - 20 minute period when water temperatures are above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Since these formulations are designed to float, the fish can be readily observed when feeding. Avoid overfeeding to reduce problems with water quality. If you have other concerns about fish and pond care, your Southern States dealer can recommend proven products and solutions.

Frequently Asked Pond Management Questions
Where can I obtain fish to stock in my pond?
Southern States dealers sponsor a Fish Days promotion
where pond owners can order different species of fish to
stock their ponds. Check with your local Southern States
dealer for the Fish Days promotion in your area.
How do I safely transfer fish to my ponds?
You can transport them in something as simple as a large
cooler all the way to sophisticated hauling boxes with
supplemental oxygen. Generally speaking, you should not
try to transfer fish over long distances if you are exceeding
one-quarter pound of fish per gallon of water.
When transferring the fish into your pond, make sure the
water temperature is within 5° F. If it is not within this
range, slowly add water from your pond to the hauling
container, not exceeding 2° per hour F.
What are some problems that can contribute
to reduced water quality in my pond?
Farm ponds are typically small with little water exchange.
In this scenario, care must be taken not to overfeed, which
can then cause water quality problems. Algal blooms are a
double edged sword:
Positive - They maintain dissolved oxygen levels and
reduce the amount of light hitting the bottom
of the pond, limiting aquatic weed growth.
Negative - They can cause dissolved oxygen problems
if and when the bloom crashes, which can
cause massive mortality due to oxygen stress.
The best strategy is to monitor feeding closely so as not to
introduce excessive nutrients into the system and try to
prevent excessive aquatic weed growth.
What are some of the aquatic weeds
I might encounter in my farm pond?
There are four groups of aquatic plants: algae, floating
weeds, emergent weeds and submerged weeds. Each can
provide cover for small gamefish to grow or provide shade
from intense sunlight for other species but can become a
problem for the pond if not correctly controlled.
