How To Make Hummingbird Nectar
Some of the best hummingbird watching can happen during the fall months, as the migrating birds seem to pass through in more concentrated numbers.
Enjoy your hummingbird population before and during the fall migration period by keeping your feeders up and full. While these birds require a high-protein diet of insects, hummingbird nectar can provide a quick pick-me-up to a traveler in need of sustaining the high energy levels demanded by the journey.
Making your own hummingbird food is a snap. Simply boil 4 cups of water on the stove, adding one cup of pure, granulated sugar to dissolve. Place the mixture in the refrigerator to cool. Once cold, pour the hummingbird food into your clean hummingbird feeder.
Adding food coloring or dye to the mixture can cause kidney damage to these delicate creatures. Be sure to make sure the food is cold and without any ingredients other than water and pure granulated sugar.
