"How Do You Treat Your Horse" Contest - Summer 2008

Treats & RecipesEvery horse lover discovers a special way to "treat" their special friends. Sometimes it's a few minutes longer with the curry, a scratch under the chin or a yummy treat like the example here.

Kim Hennessy of Honey Brook, PA, knows how to treat her horses right. Her winning entry of Happy Horse Cookies, made with textured Legends® feed, gets her crew grinning when she comes around with a plateful. Try all these recipes to give your barn-full a feast. There are a couple here that we wouldn't even mind trying ourselves. (Oatmeal Surprise, anyone?)

Hennessy's Happy Horse Cookies

Kim Hennessy - Honey Brook, PA

  • 5 cups textured Legends feed
  • 4 cups flour
  • 12 oz. molasses

Mix all the ingredients in mixer, add 1/4 cup water if needed to make mix like thick cookie dough. Press into jelly roll pan, about 1/2 inch thick.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes, take pan out. Cut into squares with pizza cutter. Break squares apart, replace on pan.

Turn off oven, put pan in oven for 30 minutes to harden up cookies. Serve!

Oatmeal Surprise

Lisa Fidler - Rock Cave, WV

  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 1/2 cup of molasses
  • 1 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of diced apples
  • 10 baby carrots cut into small pieces
  • A couple of crushed peppermints

Put everything in a bowl and stir together well. Serves 2-3 horses.

Oat & Honey Pops

Autumn Paul - Chesapeake, VA

  • 1 apple
  • Baby carrots
  • 1 cup oats
  • Honey or molasses
  • Ice cube tray

Blend or use food processor to chop up 1 apple and a few carrots. In bowl, mix 1-cup oats with the apples and carrots. Add some honey or molasses - just enough to wet all the oats. Spoon mixture into ice cube tray spaces. Stick a baby carrot into the center of each square. Put ice tray in the freezer for overnight. In the morning, pop them out and serve.
