Fall 2007 Winners!


Blue RibbonSouthern States is pleased to honor our equine customers who have recently won in competitions. Congratulations to all our Winners!

While the temperatures are cooling down - the winning ways of Southern States customers continues to heat up! At the Raleigh Indoor Holiday Classic (December 28-31) a whole host of barns went home with championship ribbons. Winners included Winn Alden Equestrian, Neysa Bryant, Zan Martin Dillon, Kathy Bennett, Lizzie Roberts, Breckenridge Manor, Showplace Farm, Walnut Knoll Farm and Stuartfield Farm.

Swan Lake Stables (a customer of the Taneytown Southern States) in Littlestown, PA hosted the Holiday Blast (December 28-30) which saw Southern States customers' ringing in the New Year with championship ribbons. Brian Gruber, Rachel Howell, Hannah Itell and Alan and Jessi Lohman all picked up tri-colored sashes.

Parker Minchin and MandrakeOn December 14th, Vass, NC resident and Southern States customer - Parker Minchin - was awarded the USHJA Amateur Sportmanship Award at their annual convention in Phoenix, AZ. Congratulations to Parker on a most deserving award!

In mid-December, hunter riders braved the cold weather and gathered at Morven Park (Leesburg, VA) for the December Hunter Classic. Winn Alden, Hannah Spiegler, Showplace Farm, Michelle Magassy and Haley Funger were all lucky enough to earn champion or reserve honors in their respective divisions.

ITs Mister MerlotIrish Tulip Equestrian Center (a customer of the Middletown, DE, Southern States) has fed the 2007 Welsh Pony Cob Society of America National Champion 1/2 Welsh 2-yr-old and Under. IT's Mr. Merlot was started on Triple Crown Growth and is now on Triple Crown Complete.

Miniature horse breeders and Southern States customers - Dale Ferrebee and Marlene Smith have had a successful 2007. Their miniature, DalMar Boogerman's King of the Roses won the World Championship 2-year-old Stallion 29" and under at the AMHA World Show in Fort Worth, Texas this fall. Ferrebee and Smith feed their miniature horses Legends Show and Pleasure and Triple Crown Low Starch from Rockbridge Farmers Cooperative in Lexington, VA.

Ada Cosby, of Manakin Sabot, VA, came home from The Barracks Horse Show with a lot of loot. Her Thoroughbred home-bred gelding, Solid Citizen, won the Adult Amateur Classic with Alex Johnson in the irons. Ada's horses are fed by the Goochland (VA) Southern States.

Southern States' own Susanne Clifford and Rachel Miller came home from the National Horse Show in Wellington, FL with a plethora of prizes. The ladies, who both work at the Charlottesville (VA) Southern States, competed in the Sidesaddle division. Susanne was champion with Sally Lamb's grey gelding - Sea Salt. Rachel came in reserve champion on The Guardian, also owned by Sally Lamb. Congratulations ladies!

Tallahassee resident, Bart Corrington won the NRHA Intermediate Open World Championship on Great King Pine at the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City, held in late-November. Bart's horses thrive on Triple Crown Complete.

 Congratulations to Southern States customer, Becky Hall, of Richmond, VA, for being bestowed the Virginia Horse Show Association Amateur Sportsmanship Award at their annual banquet at The Homestead on December 2nd.

The national championships keep rolling in for Virignia-based Arabian trainer Tommy Garland. The week of Thanksgiving, he won 5 championships and 3 reserve championships at the Brazilian Arabian Nationals.

Laurel Watson and LeoLaurel Watson of Dallas, NC, and her two-year-old Cleveland Bay colt, Leo, have ended the show year as USDF All-Breed Winner for Dressage Sport Horse Breeding. Leo is the first Cleveland Bay to win this award. Leo eats Legends Show and Pleasure from the Gastonia, NC, Southern States.

Ruth Ann Steinbrecher and Wishbone, photo taken by Ken SiemsRuth Ann Steinbrecher and her 4 year old Spotted Saddle Horse, Destiny's Heartbreaker (Wishbone), recently competed at the National Walking Horse Association's National Championship horse show in Murfreesboro, TN and were crowned the NWHA Youth Spotted Saddle Horse Champions.  At 1,761 entries, the National Show is the largest flat shod horse show in the world.  The pair also presented the American flag during the opening ceremony on the Championship night.  Ruth Ann and Wishbone are the current Georgia 4-H State Senior Saddle Seat Champions and the Regional 4-H Reserve Champions for the Non-Trotting Saddle Seat division.  The Steinbrecher family has owned Wishbone since he was a weanling and feed him Southern States Triple Crown 10% Performance formula from Farmers & Gardner's Supply of Jesup, Georgia.

Sheralee Fiore and Copenhagen Sue Fiore and Lakota

The New York mother-daughter duo of Sue and Sheralee Fiore (pictured at the NY State NBHA Finals) had a good outing at the NBHA World Finals in Augusta, Georgia. Sue and her horse Lakota placed 2nd in the first go-round in the 4D, winning her a buckle and prize money. Sheralee is an employee of the Port Jefferson Agway on Long Island.

Sulu Rose Reed and Ganon. Photo by Sarah Black.What a week Southern States-fed horses had at the Duke Children's Benefit Horse Show in Raleigh, NC, November 6-11. Sulu Rose Reed and Ganon won the $30,000 Grand Prix. Laura Scaletti and Heritage won the Atlantic Coast League Amateur Owner Hunter Finals. Kick the Clouds kicked up his heels with rider Becky Forbes on their way to leading the victory gallop in the Atlantic Coast League Adult Jumper Finals. Babette and Danny Robertshaw won the championship in the First Year Green Hunters. Kathy Bennett and her mare, appropriately named - Winning My Way, were reserve champions in the Older Amateur Owners. King of Rex was the reserve championship King of the Younger Children's Hunters with owner Elizabeth Grover. About Face and Sarah Bryan took home the reserve title in the Large Pony Hunters. Sarah also picked up the reserve championship in the Large Green Pony Hunters with Out 'N About. Southern States is proud of all of you!

Tommy GarlandThe Arabian Nationals were held in mid-October in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Congratulations to Southern States customer Tommy Garland. He was National Champion Junior Horse Western Pleasure with Pegasus Arabians’ Masquerade. He also acted as trainer for Dick Jenkin’s SF Front Row who was Reserve National Champion Half Arab Halter Gelding. The long trip out to New Mexico was definitely worth it!

Three cheers for Stuarts Draft (VA) resident Becky Forbes and her black gelding, Kick the Clouds, who placed 2nd in the NAL Adult Jumper Finals at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. Becky worked hard all year to qualify for the finals. Her efforts are to be commended!

Debbie McDonald and I Got The InvitaionDebbie McDonald, who works at the Emporia (VA) Southern States, had a successful outing with her yearling gelding, I Got The Invitation, at the Central Virginia Paint Horse Color Classic Fall Futurity & POR in mid-October. The duo was reserve champion in the Yearling Lounge Line Futurity and NSBA.

Brunello and Liza Towell Boyd have officially swept the fall indoor show season in the Regular Working Hunters with their championship awarded October 23rd at The Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, PA. This is an amazing feat for any pair! Liza and her father Jack's customer Sarah Ward also had a successful show. She rode her horse Onassis to the blue ribbon in the Older Large Junior Hunter Stake class.

Southern States employee, Susanne Clifford, picked up the Ladies Sidesaddle Championship at Harrisburg aboard Sally Lamb's lovely grey gelding, Sea Salt. This just proves that Southern States truly is, "Brands you trust. People who know."

TTB Cutting Horses, from Rocky Mount, VA, has had an extremely successful season in the cutting pen. The Music City Futurity, sponsored by country duo Brooks and Dunn was won by Tracy Barton and High Brow Doll. Tracy also won the 4-yr-old Futurity at the event with Pats Mate. Pats Mate also collected 1st prize in the 4-yr-old Amateur class with Ernie Causey. Earlier in the season, Tracy won the Open Finals at the Tobacco Road Futurity with High Brow Doll. Tracy's son Travis Barton  has been doing some major winning of his own, as his took home 1st place in the 2007 Summer Cutting Spectacular Youth Championships. Congrats to everyone at TTB Cutting Horses on a great year!

Christabel Sweeney, from Strasburg, VA, was 3rd in the Adult Amateur Classic at the Summerplace Farm Horse Show in late-September. Christabel showed her horse, Expresso to the honor.

Goochland (VA) Southern States customer Hampden Row had a big win at the USGPL Finals in Culpeper, VA, on Saturday, September 29th. Trainer Eric Dirks won the $10,000 PreGreen Hunter Classic aboard Jessie Smith's lovely grey gelding, Key West.

Sulu Rose Reed and LeondorSulu Rose Reed has jumped her way to a pile of accolades in the jumper ring over the past few months. Riding out of Reed Training & Sales at Stillmeadows Farm in Mechanicsville, VA - Reed's horses are all fueled by Triple Crown Complete. Leondor, a gorgeous bay Holsteiner stallion that Reed owns along with The Galloping Field, won the $40,000 HITS Grand Prix in Culpeper, VA on August 26th and was 5th in the same class the following week. In mid-September, Leondor was 2nd in the $25,000 PJA Grand Prix in Quentin, PA. Reed also piloted Ganon, a grey Holsteiner, to the blue ribbon in the $30,000 Mt. Equinox Grand Prix in Manchester, VT, on August 12th. Congrats to Reed and her husband Derek on their recent wins!

Astride With Pride Therapeutic Riding Program out of Bedford, VA, is pleased to announce that Charity, one of their therapy horses, has been chosen as the 2007 NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association ) Region 3 Winner.  This is one of the highest awards a therapy horse can be given. Charity is a Quarter Horse mare who came to the center after being left at a boarding barn when her owners went through a divorce. Region 3 covers Virginia, West Va, North Carolina and South Carolina.  There are 69 NARHA member centers in this region.  Best of luck to Charity as she aims for the National award.

The Maryland Horse and Pony Show in Upper Marlboro, MD saw lots of customers heading home with championships. From Alan Lohman's barn, Christine Morrison and Arch Angel were Champion in the Older Children's Hunters and Grand Champion Children's Hunters. Barn mate Courtney Cummings was Champion on Dani Drezner's gelding - Wise Counsel - in the Adult Amateurs 36-45. Hailing from the Richmond area, Kimmie Gottwald and Stop the Press were victorious in the Short Stirrup. Meanwhile, older sister Caroline Gottwald was reserve champion in the Large Junior Hunters with Blue Canyon.

Southern States customer - Lloyd Wood, aka Hillbilly Express, won the TriState Pony Pullers SuperHeavyweight Division World Championship Horse Pull at New Martinsville, WV, on Saturday, Sept. 15. He is a customer of Hundred Farm Supply, Hundred, WV.

With a new season upon us comes a new crop of winners in the Southern States Family.

In the Summer issue of Equussource, we did a feature story on the Adams family from Southwest Virginia who participate in plowing competition. We are thrilled to announce that 17-yr-old Matthew Adams placed first in the Youth Division at the USA Plowing Match held in Dayton, Ohio. Way to go Matthew!

Southern States is proud to feed many of the winners at the prestigous Warrenton Horse Show held over Labor Day Weekend in Virginia: EMO Stables, Nokomis Farm, Lindsley Royster, Hilary Scheer Gerhardt, Cismont Manor, Sally Lamb, Oliver Brown and Junior Johnson.

Just down the road from Warrenton, in Culpeper, VA, there were other Southern States customers raking in the championship ribbons at the Constitution Classic including Michelle Anderson, Haley Funger, Sidney Ellis, Caitlyn Ivey, Ray Coutley and Kristen Glover.

Congratulations to Eric Fabian, of Schenectady, NY, for qualifying for qualifying for a National Shoot Out in the United States Team Roping Championships (USTRC) as a header in Oklahoma City - that will take place later this fall. Eric has been winning his way around the northern part of the Southern States territory all summer.
