Southern States is pleased to honor our equine customers who have recently won in competitions. Congratulations to all our Winners!

April 30th Highlights

The Lexington Spring Festival (VA) started April 22nd at the Virginia Horse Center. The first week of competition, Lexington Spring Premiere, was a winning week for many Southern States customers. Rebecca Forbes was awarded the Best Adult Amateur Jumper Rider with her championship in the Adult Amateur Jumper division and her second place finish in the Adult Jumper Classic on Kick the Clouds.

Lane Change Farm, hailing from Keswick, VA, picked up a lot of awards! Their tri-color winning horses included Thus Far, Touch of Magic, Premonition, Theodore, Short Story Long, Up Shot, Lumiere, Honestly and Content.

Teddi Ismond coached Caitlin Iren to a blue ribbon win in the VHSA Hunter Seat Medal.

Junior Johnson took home blue ribbons in the breeding classes with Apenberry Hill and Rurik the Red.

Maye Show Ponies trained Carly Williams and Rollingwoods Cowboy Up to a reserve title in the Small/Medium Children's Pony Hunter division.

Betty Oare and her faithful mount, Estrella, were reserve champions in the Older Amateur Owner division.

Chevy Chase, MD – based Meadowbrook Stables produced a championship with Prestige in the Limit Rider Hunter division.

Tommy Serio rode Tinseltown and Scooter to tri-color awards in the PreGreen divisions. Tinseltown's owner – Jennifer Weaver – took the championship in the Adult Amateur 36-45 division.

Richard Taylor handled Blue Horizon and Sandy Lane Serendipity to wins in the breeding classes.

The Chris Wynne-trained entry of Petunia Mae was champion in the Green Pony Hunter division.


April 22nd Highlights

It was a great show for Southern States customers at the Commonwealth National, held in Culpeper, VA April 15-19. Piloting Southern States-fed horses to tri-colors were Kasey Evans, Betty Oare, Winn Alden, Hillary Gerhardt, Grace Glover, Hannah Spiegler, Hannah Itell, Peyton Smith, Ray Coutley, Derek Reed, Katrina Weinig, Jennifer Osterman, Taylor Harpman and Brooke Kemper. Congrats to all!!


April 15th Highlights

A HUGE Congratulations to the UVA Men's and Women's Polo Teams for winning the Intercollegiate National Indoor Polo Tournament held at UVA April 8th! Southern States was glad to help sponsor the event and is proud to feed the winning teams. A good well done to Coach Lou Lopez and his players!

And while UVA and Virginia Tech are big rivals in ACC sports, no one can deny that they both produce great equestrians. Virginia Tech will be sending three students and one alumni qualify for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National FInals in Murfeesboro, TN. The Final will take place the week of April 20th. Paige Messick, Abbey Carmichael, Brent Noll and ALicia Salo will be representing the Hokies.


April 1st Highlights

The Virginia Tech Hokies did extremely well at the IHSA Regionals at St. Andrews University on 3/27. Advancing to Zone Finals, to be held at Mary Washington Univserity, on April 5th will be Allison Jones, Paige Messick, Caitlin Cox, Abbey Carmichael and Brent Noll.

Junior Johnson handling Nob HillJunior Johnson showed many horses on the line to wins at the Showplace Spring Festival held at the Prince George's Equestrian Center the last week of March. Johnson led Aspenberry Hill, Oak Hill and Rurik the Red to blue ribbons. Oak Hill was voted Best Young Horse under both judges. Other Southern States winners at Showplace Spring Festival included Caves Farm, Showplace Farm, Sally Lamb, Michael Friedman, Winn Alden, Grace Wilkins and Rebecca Forbes.


March 25th Highlights

The Swan Lake Winter Finals took place March 20-22 and the spring weather was a blessing over the weekend. Many Southern States-fed horses found success at the show near Gett

The Swan Lake Winter Finals took place March 20-22 and the spring weather was a blessing over the weekend. Many Southern States-fed horses found success at the show taking place near Gettysburg, PA. The Brad Fincher-trained entry of Frontman earned championships in the First Year Green Hunters and the Green Conformation Hunters with Fincher in the irons.

Bill ShifflettCharlottesville (VA) customer, Bill Shiflet, is gearing up for another wonderful season on his undefeated American Saddlebred mare – Leatherwood's All Smiles. Shiflet is a Saddlebred trainer based out of Gordonsville, VA. The Legends Show and Pleasure-fed mare was undefeated in the 2008 season in the Park Pleasure classes. Leatherwood's All Smiles brought home the wins for owner Anne Holmes.

Turtle Bay was reserve champion in the Green Conformations for trainer Winn Alden. Winn was also reserve champion in the Regular Working Hunterson Urban for owner Leigh Rutti. Hailing from Richmond, VA, Hannah Spiegler was champion in the Children's Pony Hunters on Woodland's Me First.

Lohman Stables had plenty of ribbons to take home to Poolesville, MD. Bailey Boyland rode Talulah to a reserve title in the Medium Pony Hunters. Leading the victory gallop in the Children's Hunter Classic was Tanka Two and Courtney Ratner. Hannah Itell was reserve champion in the Younger Children's Hunters with her new horse Kellan. Rounding out the wins were Sara Steinberg and It's All About Me who claimed victory in the Large Pony Hunters.

Caves Farm and trainer Katie Cooper had a good weekend. Student Jackie Watts rode MacIntock to the championship win in the Medium Pony Hunters, while Jackie's sister Lauren won the H&H Tack Shop Pony Medal. Crimson Star was reserve champion in the Children's Pony Hunters with Lauren Ginsburg for Caves Farm. Lauren also won the MHSA Children's Pony Medal.

Noah Abramson picked up a win in the MHSA Medal for trainer Kim Williams. Williams' daughter Hannah won the ASPCA Maclay class.


March 19th Highlights

Regional competition next weekend at St. Andrews. Representing Virginia Tech are Brett Flower, Lindsey Williamson, Allison Jones, Paige Messick, Lauren Ryalls, Caitlin Cox, Brent Noll and Abby Carmichael. The team is trained by T. McDonald and Sherri West.

More great eventing news from Plain Dealing Farm out of Scottsville, VA. Last weekend at Southern Pines Horse Trials #1, Molly Hoope won a Novice division with Carousel's Killian. Molly's student, Benita Strini won the Preliminary division with Cameron Creek.  There is a great photo of Benita on www.useventing.com. Benita also won the Junior/Young Riders Preliminary division at Pine Top (Feb 28 - March 1), and won the Junior/Young Riders Training division at Sporting Days (Feb 7-8).

Turning our attention to the show hunter ring, Southern States customers were winning in full force at the Raleigh Indoor Spring Hunter Classic in North Carolina March 12-15. Heritage was champion in the Regular Working Hunters for Winn Alden Equestrian and picked up a win in the Jr/AO Hunter Classic for owner Laura Scaletti. Caroline DeVan's Little China Girl was champion in the Small Pony Hunters for trainer Lisa Hammerschmidt. Trainer Lauren Hill's Seaborne Telltale was reserve champion Children's Pony Hunter for Lilly Meggison. Showplace Farm brought home two championship ribbons to Gloucester, VA with wins from Lone Star and Wellen Golden Glory. The Don Sheehan-trained entry of Prestigous was champion in the Green Conformation Hunters. Cismont Manor Farm won championships with Summer Fling and Imperial Crown. Breckenridge Manor had a wonderful show! Legendary, Simpactico, Lorenzo, Rejoice and At Last all put tri-color ribbons up on the Breckridge banner.

The HITS Ocala Winter Circuit came to a conclusion on March 15th. Rosalynn made a clean sweep for EMO Stables, coming home with another tri-color in the Second Year Green Hunters. Betty Oare picked up a championship on her fabulous partner of many year – Estrella – in the Older Amateur Owners.


March 13th Highlights

Plain Dealing Farm, out of Charlottesville, VA, had a very successful season on the Aiken (SC) Eventing Circuit this winter. With Molly Hooper in the irons, Pantalaimon was the winner in Open Training at the Sporting Days Farm Horse Trials (February 7-8) and second in Open Training at Pine Top Farm Horse Trials (February 14-15). Molly piloted Kiltartan to the win in the Open Intermediate Combined Test at Sporting Days Farm Horse Trial. Carousel's Killian and Molly were the winners in Open Novice at Full Gallop Farm Horse Trials (February 4). And wrapping up the blue ribbon wins for Plain Dealing were Molly and Andiamo who won the Open Novice at Full Gallop Farm Horse Trials. Congrats on a wonderful circuit!


March 6th Highlights

…and the winning rolls on!

Down at the HITS IV Ocala Tournament (February 25-March 1), EMO Stables' Rosalynn continues to tear it up in the Second Year Green Working Hunters – adding another championship to her resume. Urban, owned by Leigh Rutti and shown by Mary Lisa Leffler was reserve champion in the Regular Working Hunters.

The Virginia Intermont Classic, held February 26-March 1 at the Virginia Horse Center, was a huge success for many Southern States customers. Breckenridge Manor had a large host of winners. Rejoice, Petunia Mae, Lorenzo, Legendary, The Admiral and Langhorne were all tri-color winners under the watchful eye of trainer Chris Wynne.

Lara Lieberman's Obrigado made a clean sweep of the Special Children's Hunter division. Carly Williams continues to do very well in the Green Pony Hunters with Marvelous Marvin – adding another reserve championship ribbon to their collection.

Christine Ryan was reserve champion in the Younger Adult Amateurs on Sobriety. Darlene Murphy and her faithful partner Zachery brought home the reserve title in the Older Amateur Owners.

Meadowbrook Stables also had a successful show. Wizard, Benlea Nimbus, Just Because and Parlequin were all winners for trainer Miranda Scott.

Frontman was reserve champion in the Green Conformation Hunters with trainer Brad Fincher. The Katie Cooper-trained entry of Hillcrest's Treasure Chest was reserve champion in the Small/Medium Children's Pony Hunters with Lauren Watts in the irons.

Gordonsville-resident Lindsley Royster's entry Davinci was champion in the 3' PreGreen Hunters with pilot Elizabeth Shoudy. Cismont Manor's Summer Fling and Imperial Crown had victorious shows in the First Year Green Hunters and 3' PreGreen Hunters respectively with rider Jocelyn Martin.
