Summer 2007 Winners!


Blue RibbonSouthern States is pleased to honor our equine customers who have recently won in competitions. Congratulations to all our Winners!

Gas prices might be on the rise, but that hasn’t kept Southern States customers from burning up the highways and earning top prizes in the performance ring this summer.

In mid-July, Many barns in the MidAtlantic area spent two weeks in Culpeper, VA at the Showday National and Cavalier Classic. Barns taking home top honors included Winn Alden Equestrian, Alexa Lowe, Hampden Row, Lysa Busch Burke, Elizabeth Roberts, Aynsley Fisher, Lane Change Farm,  Zan Martin Dillon, Cindy Wise and Breckenridge Manor.

Some barns have opted for cooler temperatures and have headed north to the Vermont Summer Festival in Manchester, VT. Shadow Ridge Farm and Lohman Stables Inc. have both had a very successful start to their summer circuits at the Vermont Summer Special and Manchester Summer Festival.

Eric Fabian, from Schenectady, NY, continues to rope his way to more accolades. Eric just returned from the USTRC East Regional Finals where he had another great series of competitions! Eric came in third in the #10 Preliminary Average with Cody Christensen of Guilford, CT. Eric was also 17th in the 10 Prelim with Kenny VanPelt of Greenville, PA, third in the #10 Incentive with Cody Christensen, and fifth in the #10 Shoot Out with Jason Larue of Bagdad, KY. With these wins, Eric has acquired another chance to rope in Oklahoma at the USTRC Championships. 

Coventry Farm students (Ashland, VA) have had a successful summer at rated hunter shows under the training of Teddi Ismond Harpman. Taylor Harpman, Marilyn Orcott, Sydney Ellis and Kristen Glover all won tri-colors this summer at Keswick, Lexington National, Culpeper and Roanoke.

A huge congratulations to Caroline Ball for winning the Virginia Horse Show Association Equitation on the Flat Championships at the Virginia Horse Center on Saturday, August 18th.  Caroline was aboard Baxter Kennedy’s “Rightfully So” for the win. The Ball family are Southern States customers from California, MD.

Southern States is proud to feed the High Selling Pony at the American Pony Hunter Classic Sale in Lexington, KY, on August 17th. Rosecroft’s St. Nick (owned by W. Gary Baker) was an entry of agent Richard Taylor. Taylor is a customer of the Orange (VA) Southern States. Rosecroft’s St. Nick sold for $61,000.  Best wishes to St. Nick and his new owners.

Hardin Towell has teamed up with new Southern States customer, Andrea King and Millstream Farm, to take over the reins on her Grand Prix horses. He is off to a great start. Hardin won the Juan Hernandez Memorial Grand Prix on Artur 28 July 22nd during the first week of the Biltmore Classic in Asheville, NC.  The pair followed up their win with a 2nd place the following week at Biltmore in the Louise Salter Memorial Grand Prix.

Sandy Rose and The BlondesLoudoun County Co-op Southern States employee Sandy Rose has been driving her way to many blue ribbons this summer. The ponies are called "The Blondes" and belong to Susu Shoemaker-Dale of Lovettsville, VA.  They are Section B, Welsh ponies named Fox Network and Network Emmy.  Sandy and “The Blondes” have won Elk Creek, Training Level pair ponies; Rockbridge Horse Show Arena Driving Trial- Training Multiples; and participated in the Upperville Colt and Horse Show Driving Competition. 

Clinton (NC) Southern States' customer - Carrolls Cutting Horses LLC produced the AQHYA Cutting Horse World Champion for the second year in a row.  Will Arthur and his gelding, Nurse Mate, clinched the championship with a score of 221. Southern States customer, Mickey Burke, had a whale of a 71st birthday on Saturday, August 11th at The Meadows in Pennsylvania. He trained the top three finishers in the 41st Coors Delvin Miller Adios harness race. May June Character, trained by Burke and driven by George Brennan, came across the wire first in a time of 1:51.3. On August 11th, Burke had 46 horses entered in races at 7 tracks across the country. At the Pocono racetrack on Saturday, the Burke-trained entry, Pocket Driver, tied the racetrack record at 1:49.3.

Nancy Peterson, Riding Director at Hollins University, has received the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. Ms. Peterson has been at Hollins (Roanoke, VA) since 1972 and has produced 16 Individual National Champions, 4 Cacchione Cup winners and 2 Team National Championships.

Ruth Ann Steinbrecher and Megan Gregory, both customers from Jessup, GA, had a grand showing at the Georgia State 4-H Championship in mid-July. Steinbracher won the Senior State Saddle Seat Championship and Gregory won the Junior State Saddle Seat Championship. Both young ladies are on their way to the 4-H Southern Regional Championship in Memphis, TN in August.

Tracey Morgan, of Beallsville, MD, was a member of the bronze-medal winning team at the 2007 World Pony Championships in Demark for Pony Driving. She was also 2nd individually for the Dressage sector of the competition with a pair of her ponies.

Virginia Tech's Breeding Program is producing winners in the show ring. At Dressage at Lexington (Virginia), Windsor VT, won the Colts of 2007 class and went on to be named Reserve Champion Colt/Gelding, Champion Young Horse and finally Reserve Grand Champion for the show.

Chanda Boylen and Thus FarSouthern States hunter/jumper customers have been having a great summer. Summerfield Farm (Keswick, VA) took a bunch of horses to Cleveland, OH to show at the Chagrin Valley Horse Shows. Summerfield customers Chanda Boylen, Cindy Firestone and Jennifer Weaver all came home with championship ribbons.

The Horse Shows in the Sun series in Culpeper, VA, in mid July saw many Southern States customers winning championship ribbons - including Betty Oare, Winn Alden, Hampden Row, Zan Martin Dillon, Courtney Muller and Marion Cosby.

Southern States customer, Jodie Harvey, won the 2D Open on July 7th at the Southern States Triple Crown NBHA Super Show in Perry, GA.

Stuart Saunders and her horse Sputnik won the Master of Fox Hounds Association Field Hunter Championships over Memorial Day weekend at Morven Park, in Leesburg, VA. Stuart is a Southern States customer at Farm&Home Supply of Kilmarnock (VA). She was thus deemed, "Centennial Grand Champion Field Hunter."  Miss Saunders is a member of the Caroline Hunt.

Alex Curtiss, of Sunshine, MD, is on her way to representing Area II in 3-Day Eventing at the North American Young Riders Championships the end of July at the Virginia Horse Center. Best of luck to Alex!

Virginia Tech equestrian team.The Virginia Tech Equestrian Team had a strong showing at the Roanoke Valley Horse Show in mid-June. Their banner was filled with multiple tri-colors. The show also had a special ceremony in honor of Emily Hilscher, who was a casualty of the shootings at VT in April.

 

Southern States customer, Junior Johnson, with Becky Hall's Otteridge Up In Lights at the Loudoun Benefit Horse show.The Loudoun Benefit Horse Show saw Southern States customers Heather Thuiniessen, MEA Farm, Winn Alden Equestrian, Sally Lamb, Rachel Howell and Sheila Motley taking home championship sashes.

 

Wayfarer Eventing (GA) is honored and pleased to announce the selection of Mike Winter and Kingpin to compete as a member of the Canadian Eventing Team at the 2007 Pan American Games in mid-July in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Carly Williams of Lexington, VA, and her pony Anna Banana were champions in the SWVHJA Pony Hunter division at the Roanoke Valley Horse Show June 18th. Other Southern States winners at Roanoke included Summerfield Farm, Austin Trent, Brooke Cole, Meadowbrook Stables, Lucy Rutter, Illyria Farm, Mary Keevil, Parker Minchin, Cismont Manor Farm and High Cotton Farm.

Southern States fed the “Best Young Horse” winner at the Devon Horse Show and County Fair (PA), Upperville Colt and Horse Show (VA), and Keswick Hunt Club Horse Show (VA)…all of which were owned by Cismont Manor Farm.

At the Upperville Colt and Horse Show (VA), held in June…

  • Spencer Ranch’s Popeye K was awarded Grand Champion Hunter
  • Alan Lohman’s student Sara Steinberg was Grand Champion Local Pony Hunter
  • Sheila Motley and Socially Speaking were Grand Champions Amateur Owners
  • Southern States’ customers Richard Taylor and Oliver Brown exhibited Grand and Reserve Best Young Pony respectively. Brown also exhibited Reserve Champion Best Young Horse.

Southern States customers Becky Forbes, Cismont Manor Farm, Beaver River Farm, Sally Lamb and Oliver Brown all won championships at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair (PA) in late May. Susanne Clifford, the Equine Specialist from the Charlottesville, VA Southern States was champion in the Ladies' Sidesaddle.

Ashley Burd wins at ISHA Nationals.Ashley Burd, is a student at Virginia Intermont, whose uncle and aunt (David and Connie Burd) own Waynesburg Agway store in PA. Ashley competed at the IHSA Dressage Nationals at Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey in late April. On April 29th, the individual competition was held.  Ashley competed at First Level and earned an average score of a 69% taking first place. Congratulations Ashley!
