Southern States is pleased to honor our equine customers who have recently won in competitions. Congratulations to all our Winners!

The summer may be winding down – but the winning ways of Southern States customers continue.

September 16th Highlights

It's always a treat to show in gorgeous Aiken, South Carolina, and Southern States customers treated themselves to many championships at the Aiken Fall Festival I (September 11-14). Solo Stables, Beaver River Farm, Bridlewood Farm and Finally Farm all cleaned up! Congrats!

Normally, the Maryland Horse and Pony Show welcome the passage into fall weather, however this year's show held September 11-14 felt more like showing in the Sahara Desert. The temperatures were brutal, but that didn't stop Southern States-fed horses from stepping up to the plate and taking home blue ribbons. Those having successful shows included Winn Alden Equestrian, Lohman Stables Inc., Caves Farm, Pocahontas Hill Farm, Junior Johnson, Meadowbrook Stables and Montpelier Station.


September 5th Highlights

Congratulations to Southern States FSTR Carolyn Williams from Lexington, VA, on her win in the weanling class at the Professional Auction Services Select Pony Breeders Show and Sale on August 30th. Carolyn took home the blue on a POA weanling she had just bought that day!

Summerfield Farm (Keswick, VA) ended their summer with a successful showing at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show and the Kentucky Hunter Jumper Association Horse Show – both held at the Kentucky Horse Park the end of August.

The Warrenton Horse Show (VA) is deep in history and tradition. Southern States customers had a very good showing at this years show held August 27-31. Lysa Burke Horkan won the $5,000 Warrenton Hunter Classic on Too Much Fun. Also taking home wins were Zan Martin Dillon, Hillary Scheer Gerhardt, Sally Lamb, Oliver Brown, Cismont Manor Farm, Keswick Hunt Club and EMO Stables.


August 28th Highlights

Southern States is proud to announce that Ashanti Farm's (Gordonsville, VA) Bruno Greber and the lovely chestnut mare, Amidala have qualified for the USEF (United States Equestrian Federation) Developing Dressage Horse Championships that will take place at the Kentucky Horse Park in mid-September. These finals are open to only 20 horses ages 7-9 who are selected by the USEF as exceptionally talented young dressage horses cognize up-and-coming dressage talent.   These championships bridge the gap between the Young Horse ranks and High Performance at the Prix St. George/Intermediare I level. Best of luck to Bruno and Amidala.

TTB Cutting Horses had a successful trip to the Area 18 Fall Futurity in Augusta, GA, the second week of August. Tracy won the Futurity on Braddie's Hi Brow Cat and also claimed top prize in the 4-yr-old Derby on Cat Starlight.

The River Glenn Horse Trials, held in New Market, TN, saw Southern States customers Emma Winter (of Wayfarer Eventing) and Kari Anderson Tankersley heading back east with top placings. Congratualtions ladies!

Weekend warriors headed to Culpeper (VA) August 20-24th for the Winston National. Many competitors were there to try and round up some last-minute points for qualifying for the fall indoor shows. Tri-color Southern States-fed horses at this show included, Kost to Coast, Rosalynn, Wallstreet, Just Sam, On the Air, Too Much Fun, Black Mail, Private Topic and Whisper.


August 20th Highlights

Hailing from the Salisbury Service in North Carolina, Southern States customer Sammi Majors received high marks at the U.S. Pony Club Nationals in Lexington, Kentucky, in July, with her team placing first in horse management and second in Polocrosse. Pony Club teaches young riders valuable skills in areas such as horse care, grooming, veterinary care, feeding, shoeing and other areas of horse management. Sammi's local pony club chapter is the South River Bend Pony Club.

As always, Southern States customers made out well at the Lexington (VA) National Horse Show held August 13-17. Olivia Wren was 2nd in the VHSA Flat Championships, VHSA Hunter Seat Medal Finals and WIHS Jumper Phase. She won the WIHS Hunter Phase and was the overall winner for the WIHS Equitation class. Oliver Brown's entry Foxmor Wigglesworth won the Pony Yearling class. Michael Friedman's entries of Wildest Dreams and Welt To Do took home two reserve championship to Maryland. Jennifer Osterman's Alize won the $1,500 Children/Adult Jumper Classic and was reserve champion in the Children's Jumper division. Manhattan on the Rocks and Taylor Made won tri-color sashes for trainer Pam Herman. Junior Johnson had a fabulous showing up in the breeding ring! Otterridge Up In Lights won the Breeding Championship with his wins in Pony Two Year Olds and Best Young Pony. Johnson also held Oak Hill for the win in the Hunter Yearlings. Brooke Kemper won a Level 4 class on Consulado. Mary McGlynn's entry of Touchstone was reserve champion in the Fletcher Hunters. Gordon Reistrup's students picked up reserve titles in the Adult Jumpers and Modified Children/Adults Hunters. Summerfield Farm had championship ribbons hanging on their banner thanks to the performances put in my Mr. Brightside, Burn Rate, Ivanhoe and Van Gogh. Zan Martin Dillon's horse, Saratoga was champion in the 3/4/5 Year Old Hunters with Elizabeth Solter in the irons. Rosecroft the Emperess won the second section of Pony Yearling for owner Gary Baker and handler Richard Taylor. Cismont Manor's entry Summer Fling was champion in the 3'3" PreGreen Hunters. And boy did the Breckenridge Manor group have a great show! Langhorne, Word Play, Parramatta, Simpatico, Morning Glory, Everything's Rosie and Rejoice all took home championship ribbons to Virginia Beach.


August 12th Highlights

Stakre, FL resident and Southern States customer Mary Elisabeth Torode and her horse, Flitin Bug, have been named the 2008 NBHA Teen World Champion. Flitin Bug is fueled by Triple Crown Complete.

Southern States fed a plethora of winners at the two-week celebration of the 85th Annual Blowing Rock Horse Show held in North Carolina in early August. Hampden Row, EMO Stables, Finally Farm, Beaver River, Cismont Manor Farm, Tami Jones and Vick Russell all had a successful show. Liza Boyd won the $25,000 Challenge of Champions Hunter Classic on Helen Scott Milner's Enticer. Yet another big win for Liza this year! Way to go!

Week 5 of the Vermont Summer Festival saw Popeye K and Rachel Spencer in the winners' circle, picking up a reserve championship in the Adult Amateur 36-45 division.

Swan Lake's Arox, with rider Matt Lowe, placed 2nd in the Maryland Horse Show Association Adult Medal Finals at the Bay State Classic in Owings Mills, MD on August 9th. Arox gets his breakfast and dinner from the Taneytown (MD) Southern States.


August 7th Highlights

Sarah Owens and BookmakerThe prestigous Shelbyville Horse Show in Kentucky showcased many of the country's finest Saddlebreds in late July-early August. Among the winners were two Southern States customers that we are very proud of - Delovely Farms (customers of Ownesboro Service) and Kalarama Farms (customers from Springfield Service).

Southern States has a Cover Girl! Congrats to Hendersonville (NC) customer Sarah Owens for making it to the cover of the August issue of USHJA's "In Stride" magazine on her wonderful jumper - Bookmaker!

 


August 1st Highlights

As part of the Virginia Tech Equine Science Summer Internship program, four undergraduate student interns showed horses owned and bred by the Virginia Tech Foundation at the Dressage at Lexington Breed Show on July 11, 2008. The interns were Rebecca Arnold, Kelli Beavers, Claire McGill, and Laura Gladney. In the weeks leading up to the show, the students received instruction in conformation analysis, biomechanics and proper handling and presentation techniques for sporthorses under the guidance of Associate Professor Rebecca K. Splan and Ms. Kristine Doyle, Manager of the Smithfield Horse Center. In the Colts of 2008 class, Kelli Beavers skillfully exhibited the three-month-old Landmark VT to a score of 85.6%, the highest score received by any horse at the entire show, and one of the top three scores given nationwide so far this year! Landmark VT went on to be named Reserve Champion Colt and Reserve Champion Young Horse. Rebecca Arnold exhibited Odet II, the mother of Landmark VT, to a win in her broodmare class and handled her expertly in the Championship ring to win Champion Mare and Reserve Champion Mature Horse titles. In the large Yearling Fillies division, Laura Gladney showed the beautiful Bella Sera VT to a second place finish, and went on to secure a Reserve Champion Filly title with the youngster. Finally, Bacarra VT pinned third in the Yearling Fillies class, and handler Claire McGill earned a third place finish in the Amateur Handler division.

Virginia Tech Ribbon Winners

That's not the only winning that was done by Southern States-fed horses during Dressage at Lexington. Ashanti Farm from Gordonsville, VA, continues to have a successful summer with their standout mare - Amidala. Bruno Greber rode the chestnut to 1st place in the USEF Developing Horse Qualifying Class and received a scored of 66% in the Prix St. George Challenge.

Cross Junction, VA, customer – Martha Angelone – has had a whale of a year in the rodeo pen. She is currently 19th in the country for Team Roping in the Wrangler National Rodeo Finals and has been named All Around Cowgirl for the state of Virginia. In addition to team roping, she also competes in calf roping, goat tying, pole bending and barrel racing.


July 15th Highlights

The Southern States Triple Crown NBHA Super Show was held July 3-6 in Perry, GA. Over 700 horses competed for over $140,000 in prize money. Southern States had many customers who were fortunate enough to take home a paycheck. Money earners included: Billy Dye, Adam Burnsed, Gregory Manley, Jennifer Peurrung, Heather Kuhn, Amanda Hardee, Tiffany Drotos, Brittney Fortana, Madison Drotos, Lanier Crosby, Mary Torode, Jennifer Butterwroth, Sarah Barlanti, Kim Landry, Tammy Lewis and Talmadge Green.

TTB Cutting Horses drove out to Fort Worth, TX, for the Paint World Show and came back to VA with a whole lot of loot! Over Fourth of July weekend, Tracy Barton was Reserve World Champion on Ten Colors owned by Gary Rosenbach in the 5&6 Year Old Challenge and was also 3rd in the finals on same horse. Tracy was Reserve World Champion on High Brow Doll owned by Phillip King in the Solid Colored Class. He then went on to win the World Championship in the Solid Colored class marking a 222 on Cat's Starlight (son of Little Miss Starlight who appears on the Legends Performance Pelleted feed bag). Way to go Tracy!

The Spalding County Drill Team out of Griffin, GA, had Drill Team went out to Tyler, Texas for their National Drill Team Championship towards the end of June. They really racked up the awards. Their team was 4th in the Color Guard and Reserve National Champion in the Youth Division. They were 4th in the Youth Theme and Reserve National Champion in the Youth Quads. The team ended up National Champion in the Adult Youth Mix.

Southern States fed A LOT of champions at the North Carolina Hunter Jumper Association Benefit Horse Show in Raleigh, NC, the first week of July. Owners who took home championship sashes included: Peyton Smith, Elizabeth Roberts, Perry Peterson, Lara Vaughn, Martin O'Rourke, Caroline Gottwald, Cherry Knoll Farm, Don Sheehan, Anne Rice, Margaret Taylor, Cindy Firestone, Rebecca Forbes and Ray Coutley.

It wouldn't be Fourth of July weekend without the Warrenton Pony Show held at the historic show grounds in Warrenton, VA. Hannah Spiegler, EMO Stables, Lysa Burke Horkan and Brittney Horkan all owned horses and ponies that took home top honors.
