August 24th Highlights
Let’s start off with wins in eventing. Claire Robinson, from Blount County, AL has had a wonderful season with Rivendell’s Mr. Bubbles. Some of her results to date include: qualifying for the 2009 October Midsouth Team Challenge Horse Trials; being the #1 ranked Novice Rider in Area III YoungRiders Team Challenge Tryouts; winning "Best Turned Out" at 2009 Area III Young Riders Training Camp; and Champion Half-Bred Connemara at 2009 Region IV Connemara Show at Pine Top Farm. Congratulations to Claire for such an outstanding season!
It’s another big victory for Tracy Bartko Magness and Tarco Van Ter Moude (pictured to the right) – leading the victory gallop for a second week in the $30,000 Grand Prix in Culpeper, VA during the Constitution Classic. Other Southern States trainers and owners whose horses picked up top prizes include Harold Chopping, Rachel Howell, Cismont Manor Farm, Winn Alden, Miranda Scott, EMO Stables, Breckenridge Manor, Moriah Farm, Show Place Farm, Hollins University, Brooke Kemper, Ray Coutley and Brooke Cole.
August 21st Highlights
What a winning week it was for Southern States-fed horses at the Winston National held in Culpeper, VA August 12-16. The most exciting news is that Tracy Magness won yet ANOTHER grand prix on Tarco Van Ter Moude. This time, the pair claimed top prize in the $30,000 HITS Grand Prix! The Magness-owned entry of Southern Suspect was reserve champion in the High Adult Amateur Jumpers with Kristen Morris.
While we’re talking about jumpers – Alexa Lowe and Westham were victorious in the Level 6 Jumpers and Will Coleman was champion in the Level 4 Jumpers with It’s the Limit.
Over on the hunter side of the show grounds, Winn Alden was champion in the Regular Working Hunters with Heritage, owned by Laura Scaletti. The Kelly Farmer-trained entry of UpShot was reserve champion in the same division.
Lysa Burke Horkan took home the championship ribbon in the Adult Amateur Hunters 46&Over division with On the Air.
The Breckenridge Manor-trained entries of Black Mail and At Last were triumphant in the Older Small Junior Hunters and Younger Children’s Hunters respectively.
Aoife Magner and Personal Patchwork were trained to the reserve title in the Small/Medium Children’s Pony Hunters by Alan Lohman.
And to round out the wins, Margaret Luck and Solaris took the championship ribbon in the Large Pony Hunters back to Walnut Knoll Farm in Manakin Sabot, VA.
August 13th Highlights

Congrats to Bailey Boyland and Abby Farmer’s black medium pony, Talulah who came is as 4th Place High Point Virginia Bred at the USEF Pony Finals in Lexington, KY August 8th!
At the “other” Lexington (VA) - Southern States fed many of the horses who were victorious at the Lexington National held at the Virginia Horse Center August 5-9. Customers who had a successful show included Summerfield Farm, Walnut Knoll Farm, Ray Coutley, Kelley Farmer, Becky Forbes, Michael Friedman, Lisa Hammerschmidt, Breckenridge Manor, Gordon Reistrup, Meadowbrook Stables, Hampden Row, JT Tallon, Richard Taylor, Cismont Manor Farm, Kim Williams and Jill Wilson.
Congratulations to Molly Bull from Plain Dealing Farm in Scottsville, VA for her success at the Loch Moy (MD) event in my July. She was 2nd in the Open Training with Pantalaimon and 4th with Carousel's Killian.
The 2009 Egyptian Event was held at the Kentucky Horse Park the first week of June. Southern States customer – Talaria Farms (GA) – had an amazing show! July 22nd Highlights
Once again, Southern States-fed horses are travelling all over the country scoring top prizes at some of the country’s biggest shows.
We’ll start with Ashanti Farm’s accomplishments at the Dressage at Lexington show held at the Virginia Horse Center July 11-12. Trainer Bruno Greber and his students had a great show. Bruno and Ashanti Farm’s Amidala were 2nd in the FEI – I-1 Challenge with a score of 70.726%. They were also 6th in the Prix St. George Challenge with a 62.632%. Congrats to the winning pair!
Out in the mid-west, Summerfield Farm and trainer Tommy Serio had a succesful stint at the Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic in Moreland Hills, OH July 8-12. Tinseltown, Versailles, Etro, Mr. Brightside and Fireside Chat were all winners for the Keswick, VA-based farm.
A new horse show has come to Virginia and had a very successful first year. The Old Dominion Horse Show held its first show at the Deep Run Hunt Club in Manakin Sabot, VA July 15-19. Trainers who had a particularly successful show included Winn Alden, Stephen Orr, Ada Cosby, Jan Simpson, Chris Wynne, Ron Danta, Lisa Hammerschmidt, Junior Johnson, Oliver Brown, Kasey Evans and Jackie Lee.
July 21st Highlights
Southern States has horses winning up and down the East Coast in July. We’ll start in the North and end up in the South.
The Vermont Summer Festival is a 6-week horse show circuit in gorgeous Manchester, Vermont. Frontman won the Green Conformation championship for trainer Brad Fincher during the first week. Over the first two weeks, the Lohman Stables banner was filled up with tri-colors thanks to the efforts of Colin’s Reality, Fargo, Wallstreet, Princeton, Personal Patchwork, Midnight Snack, Summertime Edition and Cavaliera Z.
The Showday National and Cavalier Classic were held the first two weeks of July in Culpeper, VA. Southern States-fed horse that rose to the occasion and took home championships included: Heritage, Popeye K, Roxanna, Whisper in the Dark, Royal Time, Trooper, Cover Art, Astor, Chrystalle, Nickelback, Touch of Sun, Providence, Steel My Heart, Marvelous Marvin, Shiraz Amaretto, Sugar Cookie, BFF Filibuster, Loverboy, Navier Stokes, Katarina, Vivienne, A’Lexie, Holiday, Matchplay, Fine Kiss, On the Air, Rimer, Piece of Work and Solaris.
Finally – wrapping up at the beach – we head to the Bob Bell-run Charleston Summer Classic shows in Johns Island, SC. These are a favorite of many exhibitors, as the shows are designed to end early in the afternoon so that there’s still time to head to the beach at the end of the day! Finally Farm (Camden, SC) had a very successful first week with championships being earned by Isaac, Ready More, Onassis, Montague, Nevada and Val D’Isere.
July 9th Highlights
Congratulations to Kirsten McManus from Citra, FL. She and her horse Flit Knox won the 2009 Florida High School Rodeo Associaiton Finals Goat Tying Championship held in Okeechobee, FL June 18-21. Kirsten - an Anthony, FL Southern States Customer - is now a qualifier for the Naitonal High School Finals Rodeo in New Mexico later this summer. Best of luck to Kirsten!

Thought we'd share a photo of Southern States customer Junior Johnson's banner at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair back in May…that's a lot of great ribbons and Southern States is proud to be a part of his accolades!

Boy do we have a lot of catching up to do! These have been some busy weeks of showing the MidAtlantic – and boy are Southern States-fed horses wracking up the wins!
Let's rewind to the Loudoun Benefit Horse Show, held at Morven Park (Leesburg, VA) June 10th-14th. River's Edge (Scott Stewart and Ken Berkley of Flemington, NJ) dominated most of the hunter divisions (and a jumper division) with horses and ponies including Way Cool, Castlewalk, Sambalino, Krystall, Farewell, Sanzibar, Too Cool, World Time, Ovation, Rockport, Promise Too, Kiana, Perle and For the Laughter.
Junior Johnson held Rurik the Red for the Best Young Horse Title. The Sidesaddle championship was won by Sally Lamb's All Aboard. Fine Kiss was reserve champion in the Older Amateur Owners with Betty Oare. Ray Coutley and Navier Stokes were victorious in the Level 3 Jumpers and the Adult Jumper Classic. Elizabeth Roberts and Blackmail picked up the reserve title in the Older Small Junior Hunters. The Emily Williams' owned entry of Well Informed took home a tri-color in the Large Children Pony Hunter division. There was a lot to love about Lovingston when he and owner/rider Corrine Davies won the Younger Adult Hunter Championship. Sandy Lane Serendipity was Reserve Best Young Pony with Richard Taylor on the end of the line.
The third week of June hosted three major Hunter/Jumper shows in the MidAtlantic area. Let's start with the Swan Lake Kick Off Classic in Littlestown, PA June 23-28. Tracy Magness has been on a heck of winning streak lately. After winning the Welcome Stakes AND the $100,000 Grand Prix at Upperville, she and her bay gelding Tarco Van Ter Moude headed 1.5 hours north to win the $1,500 Welcome Stakes AND $35,000 Swan Lake Grand Prix. Tracy also trained Ray Coutley to the reserve title in the High Children's/Adult Jumpers.
Brad Fincher and Frontman were the reserve champions in the Green Conformation Hunters. Crimson Star was reserve champion in the Small/Medium Pony Hunters for Caves Farm. Caves Farm's Molly Wolfe was also reserve champion in Sligo in the 1.25m Jumpers. Just Blue and Bailey Boyland were reserve champion in the Green Pony Hunters. Hannah Williams won the USEF/Pessoa Hunt Seat Medal.
Heading South down I95 we arrive at the Deep Run Hunt Horse Show that is located just west of Richmond, VA. Winn Alden Equestrian had a great week with Heritage, Showgirl, Shiraz Amaretto and Touch of Sun all putting tri-colors on her banner. The Ada Cosby-trained entries of Solaris, Rappahannock and Wind Blown Valentine all had tri-color winning weeks! Beaver River Farm made the long drive north from Camden, SC to win championship honors with Shem Creek, Tenerife and Lion's Paw. Maggie Sellers was champion in the Local Junior/Amateur Hunters with Frosting on the Cake. Jackie Lee's Show Place Farm entries had an amazing show. Taking home big wins were Sugar Cookie, Steel My Heart, Wellen Golden Glory and My Wish. And as usual – Breckenridge Manor had a lot to celebrate – with wins from Legendary, Lorenzo, Rejoice, Langhorne, The Admiral and Blackmail.
And finally, we'11 go 2.5hours southwest to Salem, VA for the Roanoke Valley Horse Show. Tommy Serio and Summerfield Farm's hunter took home the majority of the tri-color awards. Tinseltown, Classic Control, Scooter, Shadowplay, Quality Control, Fireside Chat and Versailles were all winners at Roanoke. Cricket Stone trainer two horses to tri-color accolades. Sedoma, Summer Fling and Legend were all winners for Cismont Manor Farm. Marvelous Marvin and Carolyn Williams took home a championship to Lexington, VA.

June 12th Highlights
We have a lot of catching up to do on behalf of all the Southern States-fed horses out there who keep piling up the blue ribbons – so let's get right to it.
The Devon Horse Show and Country Fair look place the last week of May near King of Prussia, PA. Devon is one of the most prestigious horse shows in America. Southern States customers who picked up tri-color accolades included Junior Johnson, Cismont Manor Farm, Richard Taylor, Derby Down Farm, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Wheeler and River's Edge Farm.
After Devon, the action moved to Upperville, VA, for the Upperville Colt and Horse Show. Again, Southern States fed many of the top performers at this show. Winners came from trainers' barns such as River's Edge, Lohman Stables Inc., Winn Alden Equestrian, Miranda Scott, Cismont Manor Farm, Richard Taylor and Junior Johnson.
Ashanti Farm's horses and customers did very well at the Virginia Dressage Association Horse Show held June 6th at Morven Park in Leesburg, VA. Winners from Ashanti included Bruno Greber and Amidala, Gardy Bloemers and Donijetti and Michelle Borch with Feshina. Congrats to all!
June 2nd Highlights
The event horses from Plain Dealing Farm (Scottsville, VA) had a good showing at the Virginia Horse Trials (Lexington, VA) May 23-24. Molly Hooper won the Beginner Novice with Etoile, won the Training with Pantalaimon, and was third in Open Novice with Carousel's Killian. Congratulations Molly!
May 21st Highlights
Southern States is thrilled to announce that Teresa McDonald was the recipient of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding service to the intercollegiate riding community. T. is the head riding instructor at Virginia Tech and has played a crucial role in building their riding program and equine studies department. Congratulations T. on this well deserved award! Ashanti Farm's (Gordonsville, VA) Amidala is racking up the accolades in the dressage ring this year. The gorgeous chestnut Hanoverian mare was ridden by trainer Bruno Grebe to two blue ribbons in the Intermediate section at the PVDA Competition in mid-May, held in Leesburg, VA. [see photo].
The annual Keswick Hunt Club Horse Show took place May 13-17 in Keswick, VA. The winnings were numerous for Southern States customers. Southern States-fed horse that took away top accolades included Tenerife, Park Place, Upshot, Content, Woodstock, All Aboard, Rosalyn, Quality Control, Banderas, Legend and Trooper.
May 8th Highlights
The Centenary College (Hackettstown, NJ) IHSA team triumphantly returned from Murfreesboro, TN with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship title as well as the 2009 Cacchione Cup for student and rider Lindsay Clark. This is the first time that Centenary Riders have won both the National Champions title as well as the Cacchione Cup. The team was coached by Michael Dowling and Heather Clark.
The Lexington Spring Festival wrapped up with the Lexington Spring Encore April 29-May 3 in Lexington, VA. Once again, Southern States-fed horses had a great showing. Winn Alden Equestrian, Lane Change Farm, Summerfield Farm, Michael Friedman, Hunting Valley, Willow Wood, Derek Reed, Meadowbrook Stables, Hampden Row, Cismont Manor and Breckenridge Manor all had championship winners at the show.
