February 26th Highlights
Congratulations to our show hunter customers on the East Coast who continue to do well this winter.
The Raleigh Indoor Winter II was held in North Carolina February 19-22. Many Southern States-fed horses and ponies brought home championship ribbons including Winning My Way, Rejoice, Legend, Heritage, Turle Bay, Loki's Revenge, Summer Fling, Lion's Paw, For the Fun, Wellen Golden Glory, Lone Star, Imperial Crown, At Last and Seaborne's Tell Tale.
At the HITS III Ocala Masters (February 18-22), Douglas Wheeler's So It Is, was champion in the First Year Green Hunters for the third week in a row. Ernie and Betty Oare's Rosalynn picked up a tri-color for the third week in a row in the Second Year Green Hunters. Finally, Hillary Scheer Gerhardt was reserve champion in the Adult Amateur 36-45 Hunters with her attractive horse Pin Up.
February 20th Highlights
For the second year in a row, Southern States has fed the winner of the AHJF/WCHR Hunter Spectacular at the Winter Equestrian Festival. The winner crowned on February 14th was Early Applause, and entry of Larry Glefke's from Keswick, VA. Early Applause, a bay Warmblood gelding, was piloted to his win by Kelley Farmer. This class is themost prestigious class for show hunters in North America.
Farther north in Florida, Southern States horses are also raking in the blue ribbons. At the HITS I Ocala Winter Classic held February 3-8, Douglas Wheeler's So It Is won the First Year Green Hunter title with Hunt Tosh in the irons. Hunt also picked up the championships on Ernie and Betty Oare's Rosalynn. Mrs. Oare picked up some wins herself – being crowned reserve champion in the Older Amateur Owners on the famed Estrella. Makena Cummings and her mother's horse Heartthrob were reserve champions in the Older Children's Hunters.
During the second week of Ocala, the HITS II Ocala Winter Festival, held February 10-15, So It Is, Rosalynn and Heartthrob picked up addition tri-color sashes. Don Sheehan's Second to None was champion in the Low Hunters and reserve champion in the PreGreen Hunters.

Southern States Feeds a Cover Girl...well her horses at least! Southern States was thrilled to see Camden, SC customer, Liza Towell-Boyd and the lovely bay gelding Scout on the cover of the February Practical Horseman!

Boy have Southern States-fed horses been having a successful winter throughout our territory!
Whitney Burch from Charlotte Hall, MD, was reserve champion in the PreAdult Hunters with Summers Jewel back in December. Whitney purchases Triple Crown Low Starch for her mare.
An awards banquet for NBHA NY03 was held in late January on Long Island. This picture shows the award winners who feed their horses Southern States Feed. Sheralee Fiore (front right) is an employee of Port Jefferson Agway where most of the winners purchase their feed. Congrats to all!
The International Side Saddle Organization (ISSO) recently announced Championships and award winners for the 2008 year. One Southern States family made a clean sweep with three generations of riders. The Grandmother, mother and granddaughters won three different championships as well as other awards. Janet Brown of Bumpass, VA, won the coveted title of National Side Saddle Champion. Her daughter, Kathleen Bowman of Henrico won National Reserve Champion. Bowman's six year old daughter, Lilly, rode away with the title of National Champion of the Youth Division. A second daughter Abigail, 12, finished fourth in the youth division. The family purchases Legends Performance, Triple Crown Chopped Alfalfa Forage and Triple Crown Senior from the Village Green-Montpelier store.
Donna Crookston and her horse Cowboy (RG Cowboys Black Cadillac) won the Nature Coast HDT January 24-25 at Black Prong in Bronson, Florida. They also won the Best Marathon award for the entire Advanced division of singles, pairs, and fours, ponies and horses. Donna purchases Reliance Hay Stretcher and Legends Performance at her local Agway store. Congratulations Donna!
There are Southern States customers all over the East Coast bringing home blue ribbons.
Stonewall County II Horse Show held in Lexington, VA the last week of January was a successful one for many horses that eat Reliance, Legends or Triple Crown. Lara Lieberman's Obrigado was reserve champion in the PreChildren's Hunter and champion in the Special Children's Hunters. Heritage, Matchplay and Showgirl put championship ribbons up on the Winn Alden Equestrian banner. Margaret Luck's Solaris was champion in the Large Pony Hunters. Michael Friedman's group had a wonderful show! Black Magic, Protégé, Mademoiselle, Passiano and Wildest Dream all had championship wins. Carolyn DeVan was champion with Little China Girl in the Small Pony Hunters. Carly Williams was reserve champion in the Small/Medium Green Pony Hunters on Marvelous Marvin. Show Place Farm's Lone Star was champion yet again in the Medium Pony Hunters - what a streak he's been on! Miranda Scott rode C-Me in Color to a championship in the PreGreens. Summer Fling and Bozeman brought home championships for Cismont Manor Farm. Virginia-beach customer Chris Wynne trained Bordeaux, At Last and Rejoice to championships.
January 22nd Highlights
Single digit temperature didn't keep Southern States customers from raking in a plethora of blue ribbons at the Stonewall Country I Horse Show held at the Virginia Horse Center January 15-18. Carly Williams had a FABULOUS show! She earned tri-colors in the Hopeful Hunters, Small/Medium Green Pony Hunters and Children's Pony Hunter divisions. Solaris and Dreams Happen were earned championships for Walnut Knoll Farm. Lisa Hammerschmidt trained Mememe and Sundance to top honors in the Small Pony Hunters and the Special Children's Hunters. Show Place Farm continued their domination of the pony hunter divisions with Lone Star and Wellen's Golden Glory. Gordon Reistrup was reserve champion in the Green Conformation Hunters on Artisan. Movin' Out and Personal Patchwork put tri-color ribbons on the Lohman Stables Inc. banner. Cismont Manor's Summer Fling was champion in the First Year Green Working Hunters with Jocelyn Martin in the irons.
In points much further south, Stephanie Riggio's Indian Summer was champion in the Adult Amateurs 18-35 at the WEF EquiSport Agency Horse Show in West Palm Beach. Jennifer Weaver and Tinseltown were reserve champion in the Low Adult Hunters under the guidance of Tommy Serio. Tommy also piloted Mr. Brightside to the championship ribbon in the Regular Conformation Hunters. Megan Fellows' Andiamo was champion in the Regular Working Hunters with Sandy Ferrell in the irons.
January 14th Highlights
It's already shaping up to be a busy season for Southern States horse owners and we're only 14 days into the new year!
Will Haynes on Classy Brute

Bristol, Tennessee steeplechase jockey – Will Haynes – had an amazing 2008 on the steeplechase circuit. For his successes, he was named National Steeplechase Association Amateur Jockey of the Year.
The second week of the Aiken circuit wrapped up with several Southern States customers having banner weeks. Taking home championship sashes included Sara McCormack, Winn Alden, Danny Robertshaw, Anne Rice, Noel Fauntleroy, Sybil Carlson, Carolyn Chesire, Sarah Ward, Torey Gauer, Neill Sites, Laura McNair and Victoria Free.
Miranda Scott's students had a successful outing at The Barracks January II held in Charlottesville, VA January 8-11. Her group took home honors in the 3' PreGreen Hunters, Children's Pony Hunters and Medium Pony Hunters. Eric Dirks rode Allison Whitemore's I Do to the championship in the 3'3" PreGreen Hunters.
January 9th Highlights
Congratulations to Southern States customer Gretchen Butts for being chosen as an Assistant Technical Delegate in Eventing for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Butts, who resides in Laytonsville, MD, is a trainer at Waredaca Farm.
Riders have already flocked south for the winter and are raking in the blue ribbons at hunter shows. Last week in Aiken, SC at the Aiken Winter Classic I, Finally Farm had three tri-color winners with Blink, Nevada and Andante. Winn Alden and her students picked up wins with Mercury and Urban. Andrea King trained Querreque to a win for rider Aley Russel in the $10,000 Mini Prix. Show Place Farm's ponies Wellen Golden Glory and Roaring Run Kiss and Tell will have championship ribbons to take back to Virginia.
Back in cold Virginia, trainers came out to The Barracks January 3-4. Trinity Hammerschmidt and her pony Mememe picked up two reserve championships in the Small and Green Pony Hunters.
December 16th Highlights
The show year is already off and running and Southern States customers are doing their fair share of taking home blue ribbons.
At the December Hunter Classic, held at Morven Park December 4-7, Meadowbrook Stables had a very successful show, taking home three tri-color ribbons.
Meanwhile that same week, down at the Carolina Horse Park, Kathy Bennett was champion in the Amateur Owner Hunters on Winning My Way.
The Barracks, located in Charlottesville, VA started their winter show series December 11-14. Southern States customers picking up wins included Hampden Row, Cedar Creek Farm, Lisa Hammerschmidt, Show Place Farm, Meadowbrook Stables and MEA Haven Farm.
Congrats to Southern States-sponsored trainer Tommy Garland. Tommy was recently selected to return as a participant at the 2009 Road to the Horse Trainer Challenge in Franklin, TN, next March.
Southern States dealer – Mill of Bel Air (MD) recently placed 11th in the Equestrian Retailer's national ranking of feed/tack store based on sales volume.
Robyn Roesser, a Southern States employee in the Store Development Department, finished up strong on her horse Live A Little. Robyn and "Hero" ended up 4th for the year in the VHSA Adult Pleasure Division. Robyn trains with Claire Durham.
December 9th Highlights
A huge round of applause to Southern States customer Nancy Rataski on her yearling filly's success at the Appaloosa World Show held in Fort Worth, TX, last month. Halfway Dignified won the World Champion Hunter in Hand Yearling Fillies class. She was shown to victory by Heather Lynn. The Rataskis reside in Youngsville, NC and feed their winners Legends Mare and Foal purchased from the Louisburg Southern States.
December 6th Highlights
Congratulations to Maryland trainer Kim Williams on being honored as the Maryland Horse Show Association's Horse Person of the Year. Kim runs Willow Wood Farm out of Woodbine, MD, and is a faithful Southern States customer. Kim is often seen at the hunter, equitation and jumper rings with her daughters Emily, Hannah and Ellie.
