History

The Harrisonburg feed mill was built in 1958 and is leased by Southern States from Rockingham Farm Bureau (RFB) since 1975. The mill is located in Rockingham County and is joined to the RFB retail facility.

We have a total of (20) team members; (12) production, (2) maintenance, (3) administrative and (3) trucking employees.

Current Business

Maximum tonnage capacity is 100,000 tons annually with current product mix.

Harrisonburg is 100% bulk only business.

  • Dairy Bulk: 21,447 tons
  • Horse: 1,101 tons
  • Pet Foods: 4 tons
  • Poultry Feed: 21,227 tons
  • Specialty Feeds/Hay/Straw: 232 tons
  • Grain and Ingredients: 1,254 tons
  • Swine Bulk: 32 tons

Transportation Capabilities

We are served by the Norfolk Southern railroad.

We have (1) bulk tractor, (3) bulk straight trucks and (1) bulk feed trailer.

Bazzell Trucking provides 3 bulk trucks and handles the balance of all bulk delivery from the Harrisonburg mill.

Storage Capabilities

  • 35,000 cubic feet of grain and process ingredient storage
  • 26 bins live to batching with
  • 64,000 cubic feet of storage
  • 3,500 cubic feet of finished feed storage in pellet source bins
  • 476 tons of bulk feed storage in 22 bins

Warehouse is 8,900 square feet for micro-ingredients.

Process control system is WEM Batch/ mix with downstream routing.

We have 450 current formulas.

Our territory covers Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.

Number of Stores Served: 36 (Retail Services 17, Co-ops 12, Dealers 7, Perdue Farms 275 tons/week). Our product forum is 56% pellets/ crumbles, with mash/textured feeds making up the 44% balance.
