Valdosta Feed Mill Fact Sheet

History

The Valdosta Feed Mill was built in 1970 for the production of catfish food in Brooks County, Georgia. The pet food plant was built in 1989 for the production of pet food in the southeast.

We have 37 employees. Southern States purchased the plant from Gold Kist on October 13, 1998 on 20 acres of land.

Current Business

Maximum tonnage capacity is 80,000 tons annually.

Current tonnage ratio is 75% bag and 25% bulk.

Annual feed tons per species:

  • Fish: 3,500 tons
  • Dairy: 600 tons
  • Horse: 13,000 tons
  • Swine: 7,000 tons
  • Pet: 7,500 tons
  • Poultry: 8,000 tons
  • Grains: 2,000 tons
  • Beef: 20,000 tons

Our liquid feed tonnage is 5,000 tons annually, with 2 trucks delivering.

Transportation Capabilities

We are served by 3 rail services: CSX, NS and ADM.

We have (3) bulk trucks with (5) bulk trailers and (2) tankers (LS).

UPS/Overnight delivers our bagged feed.

Storage Capabilities

  • 95,000 bushels grain storage
  • 300 tons bulk pet food storage for bagging
  • 50 tons bulk fish storage
  • 300 tons bulk feed storage
  • 100 tons bag feed storage
  • 27 ingredient bins live to batching

2 Inglett & Company duplex bag lines with Fast Trac II controls: one for pet food and one for feed, with a rate of 14 tons per hour per system. Both lines are manual stacking on wood and plastic pallets.

2 warehouses: pet food warehouse is 13,000 square feet and feed
mill warehouse is 15,000 square feet.

Process control system is Interstates Control (ICSI) with current upgrades completed this year.

We have 350 current formulas.

Quality Control Features

  • HACCP certified through Facility Certification Institute/AFIA.
  • Infrared analyzer (checks levels of fat and protein and moisture levels of feeds, fish and pet foods).

  • Quality Control Excellence Award the past 5 years. Score of 96 and above.
  • No Lost Time Accident Award last 5 years.
  • Employee of the Month Award is presented each month locally.

Territory Served

Our territory covers all of Florida, south Alabama, south Georgia and South Carolina below Columbia. Our product forum is 60% pellets, 30% extruded and 10% mash.
