Southern States Welcomes National FFA Vice President and Virginia FFA Officers to Celebrate National FFA Week (02/29/08)

Richmond, Va.—Local FFA chapter officers, Virginia FFA officers and National FFA Vice-President, Tyler Tenbarge, joined members of the Southern States management and FFA alumni to celebrate National FFA week at the Cooperative’s headquarters on February 19, 2008.

Tenbarge and Allen Bowers, Virginia FFA Association president, shared FFA’s mission of premier leadership, personal growth and career success and ways that the organization is achieving those goals. “Southern States and FFA share a similar heritage with both of our beginnings right here in Virginia,” Tenbarge said.

FFA officers from King William and Massaponax High Schools joined Virginia FFA officers and National FFA Vice-President Tyler Tenbarge in the visit. Southern States Chief Executive Officer Tom Scribner called attention to the number of key leaders in Southern States that are FFA alumni and assured the FFA officers that their participation in FFA would contribute to career success.  “FFA is one of the greatest youth organizations and you are our future leaders,” Scribner said.

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 500,823 student members—all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture—as part of 7,358 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.  The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988, in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education.  The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.  Visit www.ffa.org for more information.

Founded in 1923, Southern States is a Richmond, Va. based farm supply and service cooperative that now has more than 300,000 farmer-members.  One of the nation’s largest agricultural cooperatives, Southern States provides a wide range of farm inputs, including fertilizer, seed, livestock feed and pet food, animal health supplies and petroleum products, as well as other items for the farm and home.  The cooperative serves its members and non-member customers through 1,100 retail outlets.  Please visit http://www.southernstates.com for more information.
