Southern States News Agriculture at a Crossroads Conference - Web Cast Information (04/29/08) There is an old Chinese proverb (some say a curse) that goes, “May you live in interesting times.” With a growing ethanol industry, a looming world financial crisis and the new farm bill debate—US agriculture is indeed living in interesting times. Clemson University is having a one-day power conference featuring three of the most influential, thought provoking, and entertaining economists in the United States to discuss the implications of these “interesting times.” Dr. Dave Kohl and Dr. Ed Seifried will put it all in perspective with discussions on the world economy, the US economy and the Agricultural economy. Dr. Barry Flinchbaugh will ponder the new farm bill and what it means for all sectors of agriculture. Other industry leaders will participate in a panel discussion at the end of the day. “Agriculture at a Crossroads” is the highlight of the 25th Southern Agricultural Lenders School. Everyone interested in agriculture is invited to attend the May 1 conference. “Eearthquake changes” are on the horizon in agriculture. “Crossroads speakers will look at these changes, which includes record high crop prices; the developing biofuels industry, which turns ag products into energy; rising food prices caused by the impact of high feed prices on the livestock industry; and record high fertilizer and chemical prices,” “They will also look at how the subprime mortgage crisis impacts both U.S. and world economies, what the impacts of the new Farm Bill will be and how international economics will affect agriculture,”. Space will be provided for up to 120 individuals not attending SEALS for a registration fee of $150 before April 1. The cost goes to $200 after that. Individuals can register at www.aglenderschool.com. For more information contact Scott A. Mickey, Clemson University farm business consultant and SEALS program coordinator, at cscfma1@ftc-i.net, or Suzanne Coker at (803) 775-4580 or (803) 968-0645.
