Marketer Sends Balloons Soaring at Virginia Festival (05/05/08)

hot air balloonHot air balloonists at the Shenandoah Valley Hot Air Balloon & Wine Festival in Millwood, Va. were borne aloft in October thanks to Southern States Winchester Co-op’s petroleum branch (Stephens City), which not only provided fuel at cost but also donated employee labor and co-sponsored the 11th annual event.

About 1500 gallons of propane were used to provide fuel for the more than 20 balloons that took part in the three-day festival, held on the grounds of the historic Long Branch estate at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains Oct. 19-21.

Wayne Jenkins, a supervisor with Southern States, was on hand with colleague Mandy Wenner of the co-op’s Winchester location to staff a booth at the event. Southern States’ Steve Buchanan and Larry Guerrant were kept busy fueling tanks. "Most of the hot-air craft made two or three flights a day," Jenkins noted.

As a festival promotion, Southern States offered up to 100 gallons of free propane to customers who signed up for new installations with the company. The special offer coincided with a billboard campaign the Co-op. was running.

In addition to balloon flights, the event featured wines produced by several Virginia vineyards, as well as live music, an antique car show, a charity run/walk, and monster truck rides. The Old Dominion Society displayed antique fire engines, and numerous craft booths were set up on the rolling lawns of the estate grounds.

Located just 60 miles from Washington, D.C., the Long Branch estate was established in the early 18th century. It is one of the most elegant manor homes in the Virginia hunt country. A young George Washington is said to have helped to survey the property. A nonprofit foundation manages the estate for the enjoyment and education of its visitors, and it is the location for a variety of seasonal events in the Clarke County community.

“This was the first time we took part in the festival,” Jenkins said. “We received a lot of praise from the balloon pilots because we met their flight schedules. The experience was good and if we have the opportunity we will do it again.”
