Southern States feed mill receives industry award
Park City, Ky. – Southern States Cooperative’s feed mill here officially has received national recognition for having the industry’s “Most Improved Truck Fleet” in 2006.
In a presentation held at the mill, Keith Epperson, director of manufacturing and training with the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), presented the award to Gary Huddleston, plant manager, and other employees. AFIA and Feed Management magazine sponsor the recognition program.
Feed manufacturing facilities throughout the nation compete for truck fleet and plant awards in the annual recognition program, and the Park City mill and other Southern States feed manufacturing operations traditionally have ranked high.
“The fact the Park City operation earned the Truck Fleet of the Year award in 1993 and was “Most Improved” this year illustrates the industry’s ongoing efforts to raise the bar in measuring safe and efficient feed delivery,” said Bill Monroe, Southern States manager of feed mill operations who also was on hand for the award presentation.
As one example, Monroe noted that Park City and all other Southern States feed mills were certified during the past fiscal year under the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety program.HACCP procedures at the mills are designed to make sure mistakes don’t happen and that customers receive the exact feed formulation they ordered.
Park City’s operations primarily involve the manufacture and delivery of custom-made bulk livestock feed to Southern States’ producer-members in central and western Kentucky. During the past fiscal year, Park City’s seven full-time drivers and one part-time driver logged some 450,000 miles delivering nearly 51,000 tons of bulk feeds.
The Park City mill also manufactures livestock feed tubs and mineral blocks sold to livestock producers by Southern States farm supply stores in 10 Middle Atlantic and Southeastern states.
The cooperative has 28 employees at the Park City location.
