Southern States Cooperative supports Habitat for Humanity (03/10/09)  -

RICHMOND, VA—Southern States Cooperative is collaborating with horticulturalists, professional groundskeepers and area businesses to provide a sustainable, green landscape for Richmond Habitat for Humanity’s Angus Road Subdivision.

Landscaping for the 5.24 acre neighborhood with 17 new homes will serve as an aesthetic purpose plus will also aid in energy and water conservation, said Lisa Bedell Habitat’s Public Relations and Events Coordinator. Bedell continued by adding sustainable landscape methods will include low maintenance turfgrass and landscape plants, strategic placement of trees and shrubs to reduce energy consumption and homeowner education on the seasonal care of their new landscapes.

“This landscaping partnership works well with our overall environmental goals to promote sustainable living and the responsible stewardship of our natural resources. With the support of local businesses and landscape specialists, we can provide additional solutions that address the aesthetics and sustainability of our landscape design”, said Leisha LaRiviere, Executive Director of Richmond Habitat.

“Southern States is proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity and support this year’s cause”,
says Steve Patterson, Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Southern States is donating SunBurst Bermudagrass seed for the third phase of the landscaping project, scheduled for late May. Bermudagrass was selected for its drought-tolerance and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic. SunBurst Bermudagrass offers superior leaf texture and density, excellent dark green color, improved cold tolerance and superior overall turf quality. Southern States will also supply lawn fertilizer as recommended by soil tests.
