Simple Pest Control (DIY)

Pests are inevitable. Whether they're invading your home or feasting on your garden, it seems as though there is always another insect to deal with. For common pests, it might be difficult to find the right product to manage all of them. If you are looking for something to supplement your existing pest-control routine, there are simple, organic options to turn to! These solutions are also great for use around people or animals that may also have sensitivities to chemical treatments.

The solution is food-grade Diatomaceous Earth. Harmless to humans and animals, Diatomaceous Earth works by dehydrating pests to death. Whether they ingest or just absorb it, the texture of Diatomaceous Earth can literally scratch through the exoskeleton, causing them to dehydrate and die.

Diatomaceous Earth is essentially the rough, sharp skeletal remains of small shellfish in powder form. At food-grade, Diatomaceous Earth is safe enough to eat or apply directly to skin. Be aware, however, that Diatomaceous Earth is a mineral dust, and like any dust caution should be used to protect from over-inhalation.

Diatomaceous Earth is a long-lasting solution to a myriad of problem-pests, including ants, cockroaches, earwigs, fleas, mites, silverfish, spiders, bed bugs, garden slugs, flies, scorpions, crickets… the list is practically endless. The best part is, they cannot build up a resistance to it!

It is not only safe and easy to use for indoor bugs & mites, but also on household pets, in gardens & flower beds, field crops, grain storage and even livestock feeding.

Household

For dry application to infested household areas, simply sprinkle the powder in and around the perimeter of the affected space. You can puff it into upholstered furniture, sprinkle on rugs and on windowsills.

Bed Bugs:

Apply liberally between the mattress and box-spring. Also apply to the carpet and any furnishings in the bedroom where bed bugs can hide. If you have hardwood floors, apply & sweep into cracks and small crevices.
In about 24-48 hours, vacuum the areas where the Diatomaceous Earth was applied, and launder bedding to remove any eggs and carcasses left behind. Reapply the Diatomaceous Earth and enjoy a bed bug-free life.

Plants:

Control aphids, flies, beetles, slugs and more inside the home, in the greenhouse or outdoors with the application of Diatomaceous Earth. It is safe for use on fruits, vegetables, flowers & grass up to and including the day of harvest. Use a duster to cover plants, covering both top & bottom of leaves. Reapply if it rains.

Pets:

Use instead of or as a supplement to your normal flea & tick control. Lightly rub into the coat of the animal to protect from fleas, ticks and lice.

You can also use it to safely de-worm your pets by mixing Diatomaceous Earth into dry or wet food. Be sure to ask your vet how much is appropriate to use for the size of animal, and if it is safe for use on animals with known allergy problems. You should not need to use more than about a ¼ teaspoon to 1 teaspoon per day.

Stored Grain:

For grain it is recommended to add approx. 7-10lbs per ton of grain. When added, Diatomaceous Earth will kill bugs and protect from further intrusion.

Livestock:

Diatomaceous Earth is extremely beneficial for livestock and can be added directly into feed. Cows, horses, sheep, goats and pigs can be given 1-2 oz per day. For chickens and all other livestock, weigh the feed being distributed and add 1-2% Diatomaceous Earth of the total feed weight.

Some benefits include controlling fleas, ticks & mites, stimulates metabolism, reduces moisture (and odor) of living areas, improves coat & hoof condition, controls worms and other internal parasites, and helps to produce stronger egg-shells & improve egg production overall. Wow!

It is always important to follow the instructions on the label of any Diatomaceous Earth product you purchase.
