Little Things Make For Big Times at M.C. Ranch Arena

M.C. Ranch Arena

All it takes is a moment and in a blink of an eye there are ramifications that echo for years down the way. One minute you're wild and single, the next you're married and have in-laws scrutinizing you. Your first child enters into the world, and now you're a role model who has to learn to say words like "shoot" and "sugar" instead of their more colorful alternative. You pull over beside a sign that says "free kittens," and now you're a cat person.

Strange, isn't it, how small things can change your life forever? For Marty and Connie Layman, the owners of M.C. Ranch in Satsuma, FL, that change came in the form of a finger.

M.C. Ranch ArenaMarty's daughter, Cherin Teaford tells the story: "My mom always rode horses, and once she married dad, he started riding. They built a barn, built an arena and started putting on ropings. My sister and I showed Western and English horses, and my dad rodeoed – team roping most of all. I remember late nights when mom and dad would be down there practicing roping and I would sit up in my room watching from the window. They thought I was sleeping in bed, but no, I was watching them."

"Then one year my dad lost his finger in a roping accident, and after that we kind of just quit. It was strange. We sold the horses, turned the ranch into a dirt bike track and just didn't talk about it much anymore."

After years of that dallying slip taking the Layman family's life away from rodeo, another little thing, Cherin's then-12-year-old daughter, Jayde, brought rodeo rushing back in. Jayde, wanted to barrel race and she was persistent about her desire.

M.C. Ranch Arena"At first Papa was like ‘no, no, no,'" says Cherin. "But then he changed to ‘yes, yes, yes.'"

In no time the Laymans returned to rodeoing. The horse lifestyle came rushing back into place. The excitement of traveling all over the country to attend youth rodeos, the regular schedules of feeding and riding and practicing, the thrill of winning, it all became a family affair again. Cherin says that Marty took to horse life as if he had never left. He rejoined old friends and was back in the saddle team roping. Within two years the ranch went from having Jayde's one horse then to six horses and now to 22 horses. Jayde, now 16, is the 2008-2009 Georgia/Florida Rodeo Queen, the M.C. Ranch is bustling like never before, and Marty is proud as ever.

These days the ranch is hosting youth and high school rodeo events at its new arena. Any day of the week you can find the barns and training facilities packed with kids practicing every event (except for rough stock), from barrel racing to tie-down roping. "Now all the kids are coming out to practice at the arena, and it's becoming a community event," says Cherin.

M.C. Ranch Arena"People pull up in the yard and just watch. It's free. We don't charge admission. And anybody who wants to come and ride can just call and come by."

For the Laymans, rodeo is about more than competition. It's about making a positive impact. "My dad absolutely eats it up. His whole purpose now is to give the kids a place to come and have a good time, do their thing and stay out of trouble. Plus it helps keep our family together and sane… and that's big."

In addition to Jayde, Marty has four grandsons, and they're all shaping up to be crack horsemen. The older boys – Jordon 10, Christopher 9, Austin 9 – don't compete yet but they always pitch in around the ranch, whether it's mowing around the barn, working the stripping shoot at the ropings, or cleaning stalls. Even young Landon Tucker at age two loves pushing the hay cart around the barn. They all enjoy being at the ranch, and the family patriarch, Marty, gets a kick out of having them there.

"It's funny, I stopped riding horses at the age of 12," says Cherin, "then my only daughter started at the age of 12. It's like the horse life stalled, but never stopped."

In the course of life, you never know what small event will bring on complete change. Whether it's a lost finger causing a loss of passion, or a ranch shaping the lives of an entire community of kids, little things can have huge impacts. It's just good to know that things had a way of working out to breathe new life into M.C. Ranch and the rodeo days of Marty Layman and his family.

Cherin Teaford is proud of their feed choice, "Of course we feed the best feed. Once we tried Southern States feed we never considered changing." M.C. Ranch Arena enjoys success from Legends® Performance and Triple Crown® Senior Formula.
