Risk Management - Nationwide Agribusiness

Farming and ranching come with their own set of unique risks for injury. Make sure you are covered.A farm can be a dangerous place to work. Accidents or injuries to employees can be devastating and have a serious impact on farm production. Personal injury accidents on the farm can affect insurance rates and even damage a company's reputation in the marketplace. With so much at stake, farmers need to do all they can to protect themselves and their employees. Proper risk management for farms and ranches can help create a safer working environment and reduce injuries.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists farming as one of the top ten most dangerous occupations. Every day agricultural workers around the country become injured on the job. While some of these injuries are minor, many can be permanent and even fatal. In addition to risks directly related to the farming business, other risks can be health or weather related. These risks, while not caused by the farm business, can have a significant impact on farm production. As business owners, farmers need to incorporate risk management plans into their business that can prevent, minimize or prepare for the uncertainties involved in farming.

What is risk management? It is the process of identifying, analyzing and evaluating potential risks within the workplace and coming up with strategies to prevent or reduce the adverse effects of production setbacks and financial loss. While all risk can't be avoided, proper risk management can help manage the unexpected. One aspect of risk management sets safety practices into action that can reduce the chances that an accident will occur. Maintaining farm equipment in good working order and storing tools in a safe place can help prevent costly mistakes and accidents. Another type of risk management, known as contingency planning, prepares in advance for possible disaster and aims to reduce any possible negative consequences. For example, adequate health and disability insurance can keep a medical issue from turning into a financial disaster that severely impacts the livelihood of the farm.

Farmers should meet with their insurance company to learn about available resources and effective risk management best practices that can help identify hazards and help reduce personal injury accidents around the farm.Nationwide Agribusiness' Risk Management Services division offers tools and checklists to help farms and ranches identify potential hazards that put your business at risk. On Your Side® Master Certified farm agents are specifically trained to help farmers and ranchers with safety and risk management. They will meet with you and provide a summary of your operation that specifically addresses potential hazards unique to your location. In addition, they will offer recommendations that may help reduce your risk.
