The Rise Of Sustainable Agriculture

A father and his son in a fieldA lot of talk is going around about "sustainable agriculture," but few people can actually pinpoint what it means.

What Is Sustainable Agriculture?

Sarah O'Connor Smith, a graduate student in the Department of Soil Science at N.C. State University, sums it up as "an approach to animal and plant production that is environmentally sound, socially just and economically viable."

The word "sustainable" pertains not only to keeping the farmed land in peak shape for future generations, but also to keeping one's wallet in check. No matter what the size of your farm, sustainable agriculture takes a holistic approach to sustaining the economic viability of all operations on which the farm depend.

Smith says sustainable agriculture means employing farming techniques that promote a healthy growing environment for your farm's crops and livestock. These techniques aren't hard to implement; they just require a little planning.

Sustainable Agriculture Techniques:

  • companion planting, based on the idea that certain plants can benefit others when planted in near proximity. Companion planting can increase yield by reducing the number of pests and weeds, and by providing protection from heat, wind or other hazardous weather.
  • crop rotation, another technique that reduces the impact of pests by planning your crop rotation. By growing different crops in succession in the same field, farmers not only cut off the food supply for pests, but they also enrich the soil with different nutrients that reduce the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • integrated pest management practices, which help growers identify and monitor pests, learn how to prevent them with methods like companion planting or crop rotation, and control their impact.

Learn More

Forming relationships with extension experts and your Southern States representatives can help both you and the experts develop sustainable practices for your farm. "What is economically viable and environmentally sound for a farmer in a certain location might not be applicable to the neighboring farm," she points out. "Experts can learn from the farmers' field experience and then use the technology, moneys, and information available to them to investigate and develop management strategies best-suited to the environment and economy of the farm."

Sustainable Agriculture Tips

When planning sustainable strategies for your land, Smith suggests starting with some of the following essential building blocks:

  • take local farm tours
  • read books about sustainable agriculture
  • investigate community-supported agricultural memberships

"If you educate yourself on what's taking place in your local community or state, then you can make informed decisions about how you feed yourself and your household."
