Making Sure Your Senior Cat Drinks Enough Water

Water is essential to your cat's health and can often help prevent severe life-threatening health problems. As cats age, they often don't drink enough water for proper maintenance of their urinary and intestinal tracts. The pet experts at Southern States understand the changing needs of your cats as they mature. Follow these cat care tips to encourage your feline to drink more water.

Hydration is critical to your cat's overall health. Is your cat drinking enough water? One way to combat dehydration in your cat is to offer canned cat food as part of your cat's diet. Dry food is usually 10% water, while canned food can contain as much as 80% water. Cats who consume wet food often get much of the daily water they need. You can increase the amount of liquids your cat gets just by switching from dry food to wet food.

How can you make sure that your feline friend stays hydrated? Offer clean, fresh water daily. Every time you feed your cat, change the water in the cat bowl. If your cat does not drink much water, consider changing the bowl. Different types of cat containers can cause the water to taste differently. If your cat has a plastic bowl, switch it to a stainless, glass or ceramic one.

Cats like cool, fresh water. Here's a great tip: place ice cubes in your cat's drinking bowl so that the water will be cool. Also, place several water bowls throughout the house to give your cat easy accessibility to water at all times.

Does your cat come running when you turn on the faucet? Many cats are fascinated by moving water. Pet experts don't really know why, but one theory is that wild cats instinctually stay away from still water which may contain disease. Maybe your cat just knows that running water is cool and refreshing.

If you’re worried that your cat may not be consuming enough water, invest in a pet water fountain. It may be a good way to encourage your cat to drink water more often. There are many varieties to choose from - some look like water fountains and others create water movement with a bubbling action.

When caring for your cat, the most important thing is to make sure your cat is getting the daily amount of water it needs. Good cat care will help ensure the continued good health of your favorite feline. Find all of the cat supplies you need at your neighborhood Southern States.
