Grilling is an American tradition. In many parts of the country, you can grill almost year round. While there are different methods of outdoor grilling, propane grilling is extremely popular because of the convenience. With a turn of a knob, you are ready to grill. Plus, propane grills have the ability to control the amount of heat needed for outdoor cooking. Liquefied Propane (LP) is stored in refillable tanks, so you don't need messy charcoal or starter fluid. If you are looking for great grilling results, follow these gas grilling tips.

Keep your grill in an open area away from the house, deck railings, and a safe distance from low hanging tree branches. To prevent fires, clean grease off the cooking grates and remove buildup from grease traps below the grill.  Always keep children and pets at a safe distance when grilling and never leave a hot grill unattended.

Keep your gas grill maintained  - it will improve performance and keep it working longer. Exposure to sunlight and extreme weather conditions can cause rusting and corrosion – use a waterproof cover for protection when not in use. Corroded parts can cause uneven heating, so clean your grill regularly.  Frequently check the ignition switches and test the hoses for leaks. Follow instructions in the user's manual when cleaning or replacing parts.

A gas grill doesn't season food like charcoal does, but you can learn how to grill with gas and infuse flavor into your food. Add aromatic chips to a smoker box and place under the cooking grate before lighting. Different varieties of wood chips include: hickory, mesquite, alder and oak chips. Apple, cherry and pecan chips are also available. Experiment with different types to find your favorite flavors. Be sure to practice food safety when grilling. Keep your cooking area clean and be careful when handling raw meat and poultry. Avoid cross contamination - never put cooked meat on the plate used to carry the raw meat.
