Chinese department of ag officials visit Southern States Cooperative
Two officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China visited Southern States Cooperative to learn about U.S. agricultural co-ops.
Chinese agronomist Huang Yaohui and staff deputy director for China’s Department of Science Technology and Education, He Xiaodan, met with President & CEO Jeff Stroburg and members of the Southern States leadership team to learn about how co-ops are organized and how they function.
“We were honored to provide insight and expertise into how Southern States and other cooperatives operate to serve our members and non-member customers.” said Stroburg. “I think they gained a better understanding of the tremendous value that cooperatives provide farmers in the United States.”
The Chinese officials toured Southern States’ fertilizer plant in King William, VA and visited farmer-customer Calvin Haile’s 2,800 row crop farm operation in Dunnsville, VA.
“One of their goals during their 6-week visit to the United States was to witness a U.S. farm operation, so it was great to be able to show them Haile Farms’ well-run operation.” said spokesperson, Chris Carter. “They were thoroughly impressed with the size of the operation and asked Calvin and Southern States agronomists a lot of great questions.”
Southern States and Calvin Haile were one of The Fertilizer Institute’s 4R Grower and Retailer Advocates of the year in 2016.
